Disappearing polygons?

How to create models in XSI and other 3D applications and make them work in Battlefront 1 & 2. Post models, tips for application usage and share anything XSI, 3DMax, SketchUp, etc.

Disappearing polygons?

Post by Rekubot »

It seems that every time I make a model and export, a polygon or two goes missing. Is it because they're too small or something? I can't figure out what needs to be done to get the polygons to show.

If anyone has encountered this problem before, can you please tell me how to fix it? Thanks.

Whoa, is that the X-45 Sniper Rifle I requested from you? I don't model, but I think the problem has to do with inverted polies.

can't you point it out with red circles or arrows so we can see what the problem is, so we don't end up screwing things up which were meant to be like that :P

can you see them from the inside? then i believe you can just select them and invert the normals.

@Majin: Yes it is, though it's certainly not finished ;). I only remembered your request today, so I've only just started it :P.

@Qdin: Eek, sorry, I thought that it was obvious what the problem was:

Now the red lines are pretty much in the way :D.

@DooFi: To be honest, I'm not sure if it has anything to do with inverted polygons, as I can select them fine from the outside. The entire barrel is just one single object though, so I had to duplicate the end polygon so that I could shrink the barrel to different sizes. I'll try making each part of the barrel out of seperate cylinders and see if that makes any difference.

heh - I added you on MSN :)

And thanks; as a matter of fact I only noticed the one at the scope; thought the rest was meant to be that way

But yeah, it pretty much seems like inverted polygons; probably caused by the extruded faces which extruded invert instead
And just by curiousity; So most of it are basic primitives? So you haven't boxmodelled a cylinder? :P You gotta try that; an important lesson :) and this way you can avoid such problems :) mainly *coughcough*

As Majin knows, I too have had this problem, and I think it has to do with some polies being not triangles, I noticed that it happens a lot on objects made by boolean operations. Try triangulating your model or deleting and re-drawing the polygons that are missing. Triangulating sometimes works for me; re-drawing always works.

When you're saying Redrawing, you mean to make the polygons yourself? whenever I do it, I have to reapply the texture on that polygon, which kinda screws things up if it was supposed to be a patch on a polymesh with more than 1 texture xD

It sure does, LoL! Thanks so much everybody, now I can get back to work on that DH-17... ;)

@Qdin: That's why you check for errors in-game before texturing I guess, LoL.

Once again, thanks everyone! And especially t551t551. :P

The game´s tolerance is also low, which means if you have tons of polys in one small area, it will weld them and essentially make that area invisible. Try reducing the poly count in those areas.

oh btw.. it looks like you have extruded a hole into the muzzle and the scope? in the heat of the battle nobody will care for those details and in addition its a huge waste of polys! Mind that there are probably 32 or more instances of the rifle in a game. And although your problem may be solved, I'd like to see a wireframe render :)

LoL, certainly not. Even I'm not that stupid :P. To be honest, I'm not sure at all why it looks like there's a hole in the barrel and scope, but I can assure you there isn't. I'll update this post with a wireframe view later.

Homework first, <sigh>...

Edit: Here we are, I bet somebody says 'watch the polys!', but meh. Polycount is 566. The trigger needs a lot of work.

It's not that you necessarily have too many polies, but they're unevenly distributed. The trigger has way too many polies compared to the stock. You could get away with the trigger just being 4-sided, and use the detail that you saved to flesh out the stock.

LoL, yeah, I realised that ages ago, and I've already done a new trigger. I guess I could put a bit more detail on what holds the scope up, at the moment they're just triangles. (Well, 3D triangles, but I've forgotten what they're called :D)

also delete the ends of the cylinder where the barrel goes into the gun, you dont even see those faces, also on cylinders delete the edges that make the end caps and use the edge draw tool "\" and draw edges going either horizontal or vertical, this will cut down polies. also to start when you make your next cylinder change the preferences when the dialogue box opens for primitives or if it doesnt hit enter while having the new primitive selected and have the base set to 1 and click on save on teh top right so that you dont get cylinders with 2 poly loops on the ends.
