Brilliant!

Contains short instances of swearing from 0:46 to 0:50 and from 4:58 to 5:02, just skip those if it bothers you.

Like the four-chord riff, the observation isn't new either. Nothing new under the sun.

Mr. Pachelbel invented the formula of musical success. I wonder what makes this melody so popular... perhaps it's its simplicity, or maybe its repetitive nature.

He didn't invent it either - it's a chord progression that gradually gets more dissident and then resolves. Technically "Canon in D" has an eight-bar chord progression (not the four-bar one discussed above). The four-bar version is common because it's the shortest chord progression that moves towards dissidence and resolves while still maintaining symmetry (the odd-numbered reset on the tonic chord).

The simple answer is that this is the most basic unit of a generally-aurally-pleasing chord progression.

Yup. While I do find both videos humorous, the information isn't anything new to trained musicians - it's just really basic music theory. Chords tend to naturally resolve in a specific set of ways. This link explains it pretty well: http://www.musictheory.net/lessons/html/id57_en.html

How do you think jazz musicians are able to improvise, or big-time composers are able to achieve incredible output? They just know how chords all fit together, and they weave their melodies around those chords. So if you wanted to compose a song, you could just lay your chord progression, something like:

I-IV-V-I
or
I-vi-IV-V-I
or
I-vi-IV-ii-V-vi-IV-V-I

You write a melody around that progression, slap on a bass part to establish the chords, and there you go, you've written a song (no guarantees it'll be a hit). If you want to spice it up, just add in a few sevenths and non-chord tones. Of course more advanced compositions have a bit more depth to them (secondary functions, modulations and the like), but if you want to throw together a pop/rock song all you need is the good ol' I-IV-V-I progression, maybe with a vi chord in there if it's a sad song (some pop/rock songs include the iii chord, which interestingly enough is among the least encountered chords in classical/romantic music).

Edit: Note that this only applies to Western tonal music, not things like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hobK_8bIDvk (by the way, I highly recommend listening to that whole piece - Indian classical music is incredibly relaxing)

And while I'm posting world music videos, I enjoyed this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7k7RlIAV ... =1&index=1

Yeah...interesting glimpse into Bulgarian culture. :P

I found an awesome video on youtube made by one of my friends.

It teaches you how to make watermarks and avatars that we can use for modding-

You also didn't say what it was, just the swear warning.

For future reference: [ url=www.gametoast.com]Gametoast[/url] without the first space is how you set those up.

Also, if you don't know how someone did something, click the quote button on the post and look at how it was set up. Just don't submit the quote though, hit back.
