This is just a guess at how you're doing it, and it's most likely wrong. I would have to guess maybe... that each piece is a moving turret/different moving position on a vehicle? Scrolling through the positions gives you different pieces? Really no idea, as you can tell (and as I said :P) just a guess.

That's correct  The pieces are nothing more than 32 heavily modified hover vehicles that you can enter and move around. Plus it uses a newly developed teleport system to put you in and take you out. I have to refine this in order to use it for other applications. Main advantage is that it will teleport you anywhere, you won't have to worry about it being an "instant move" and landing you in the wrong spot.

Thanks for the comments everyone :)

I agree, it's awesome, but have you scripted a way to prevent illegal moves or moves out of turn?

Let me ask you this. When you play basketball with your friends, do you need LUA scripting in order for everyone to follow the rules? No. You just know the rules and follow them. Same here.

The physics of the game are 100% like if you were playing with real pieces with your friend. You move them around, that's it. And you actually have to know the rules in order to follow them. I mean, if you were to play basketball, sure you could just punch people and throw the ball in their face then tip over the hoop, but that's why there's rules that make it a game.

I get it. But I don't think the AI will. Just hope they don't go in there during single-player matches, Rep. Or you could LUA code them not to  . Jk.

Ha.

There's not a snowball's chance in - you know - of SWBF2 AI playing chess. I promise you they couldn't be scripted to do it, even (you could script a series of moves and brute-force the solution but that's not the AI doing anything).

haha true, AI will always be dumb no matter what...(unless it's rep commando where they're only half dumb) but what you said is totally true rep, i didn't really think of it that way before.

They were all dumb in Republic Commando, around me at least. Standing directly in my fire, not smart.
Yeah, I get how hopefully people will play chess by the rules. Awesome, keep it up.

Yeah, didn't really figure that was possible, just making sure. Guess we can't play with Fluffy then. :P

Yet. You could play with me if that was backgammon, though. :maulsaber: It's the only board game I've never flipped halfway through the game. Well, that and checkers.

Now there's an idea. Checkers couldn't be any harder than chess, and I'm sure more people would know how to play. Of course, if that would mean replacing chess, I would say no, but if there could be a room designated to a few board games that would be awesome.

If we start a server once this awesome map is released, one of us could teach you the basics, perhaps?

Checkers would be a good idea too, but Chess just seems to be more epic. There's a lot more strategy in chess and I always thought checkers was a little kid's game.

We've all been looking at the idea and I don't think anyone has paid any attention to the details (not a bad thing, just noticed it when I looked at the pictures again).

What I'm asking is, did you model those pieces, Rep, or get them somewhere online? If you modeled them, that's yet more amazing work.

Autodesk VIZ 2008 which is basically a different version of 3dsMax (I still find XSI to be foreign). Made them almost two years ago at school during a drafting class, I actually helped teach it...

Most are just lathed with some extrusions here or there. The knight was made out of a spline cage then polygon surfaced (similar to NURBS modeling). I had all of these lying around on my school HD space, took them home for the summer :) Thanks.

A little text update:
I'm cutting some useless things out in order to get it done faster and focus more on what's important. Some things that are going: shooting range, skeet, and mini duel arena. I have to make trade-offs. Chess will ultimately be way more fun than shooting something over and over at the range. Why need a mini duel arena, if the whole map is a duel arena? Also spawning a unit as a deployable object is kinda unstable, and I don't feel like spending days of hacking to make tiny little things work when it's besides the point of the map.

In it's place, I'm spending extra time on the SP aspects of the game. Boy, can I tell you that Conquest is going to be GREAT (king of the hill fortress + industrial scrap and sniper towers). When I polish it up, I'll get some pics :) Also, within clan mode will be yet another button to trigger "DeathMatch" mode. This opens both portals up, which will teleport you to a random spot in the current layout. This will be similar to HL2:DM for those that have played it. It will also sport a new layout designed for DM that incorporates some of the props from SP conquest. CTF will also be on its way, using the same layout as SP conquest. Once this is done, it's all polishing from here.

Making chess pieces are actually part of the 3ds Max documentation.
Was that why you made them?

 Cool. Now that I don't spend so much time online anymore, it will be good to do stuff in SP. Keep it up Rep!
