Kitbash help

Recently I've decided to make a consular-class cruiser:

by taking apart a cr70 corvette:

Image

and rearranging the pieces. But how do I actually disassamble it to get the basic parts? Or would it be better to start from scratch?

With those two models? The basic overall shape is the same, but when you look at detail, they're really pretty dissimilar. It would be much better to start a whole new model.

On a side note, is there really a way to break down a .obj file to get the primitves?

No, but if you follow THIS method, you should get some more manageable chunks.
