But you can block a blast from the full power of the force? I think it is annoying, but fun to deal out. :P

Force Choke is a good defense against engineers or rocket troopers trying to throw a mine at you. :P

Are there newer versions of BF2 that have more players? I'm on 1.1 right now, and there's basically three servers that have players in them. One is a hero assault server, while the others don't grant the sanctity of having team damage on.

It's getting late on the east coast. If you checked a couple hours ago there would be more full servers.

Really? I hate the engineer class. His shotgun has no range, and detpacks are silly when you can't see where you put them, and the med packs feel like cheating to me, and the fusion cutter never gets you anywhere. I don't think I've cracked more than two vehicles.

I play as him while I'm waiting for the unlocked classes sometimes, but I prefer sniping or rifling. I really wish people were less of a d*** online, not doing stupid moves, and playing to play with other people.

PS2 SWBF2 online is a bit better, instead of all engineers there usually 50/50 engineers/rocketeers and occasionally the one crazy good guy who is a rifleman and almost constantly has the award rifle. Darktrooper's arc casters fire about twice as fast in the ps2 version, and can kill someone with a second shot before they recover from the stun, so servers usually change the point to unlock the special classes to around 60 and 80 each. Most servers have team damage on, so engineers throw their detpacks so they don't kill themselves.

In space people usually spawn as pilot and shoot the enemy's auto turrets until they get the award pistol, then camp in the other end of their hanger and kill them as they respawn.

Recently though, I literally dusted off my ps2 and tried playing online, the lag was so much worse than a year ago that the only way I had any hope of killing people was with rockets or throwing detpacks. I got bored of the horrible lag after about 25 minutes then put my ps2 away for good and went back to uncharted 2.

There's zero way to design around this - for all the amount of time spent playing and replaying and designing a game, that entire effort is going to be duplicated almost instantaneously in a public release (a solid estimate is around eight minutes after public release) - and to top that off, there's no way to predict how any sort of metagame will evolve.
Are you sure?

It seems like it would be common sense on what kinds of weapons to give what types of units, and how to make weapons work in order to not make them too overpowered.

So how many people who posted here feel like the engineer class ruins the game? Or at least turns the game into less than it should be.

Not me. No I don't use it, I don't like it, but I've played against (arguably) some of the best engineers in the game, and they're not invincible. Each class has their own strength, but which map you are playing will probably determine what class is most effective. E.G. Tantive is the engineer's playground, while on Utapau if you're not a sniper you'll get destroyed.

Snipers can be overall tougher than engineers, if you get good enough you can noscope people in close-quarters or scope them real quick across the map, 1-kill headshots all the way (besides wookies and rocketeers)

Just a trick some of you might not think of, when I'm playing any game with grenades that bounce, in the right situation I will bounce them off walls. Engineers LOVE to chase people, and that has helped me a lot.

100% positive. There is zero way to have a perfectly "balanced" game - there is not and will never be any dev cycle long enough to give the game the kind of play hours the public subjects the game to, and there's zero way to predict how the multiplayer community will eventually choose to play - none of the designers are "average players," and you can only gather so much information from a beta test. I can guarantee you almost any game you can name will have some unit/character/setup that is more popular because it is "easier" or perceived to be "better."

In their own way, the SWBF2 units are pretty well balanced. On paper, all the units have their roles - in practicality, the engineer has evolved in a way that represents abuses of its original intent (i.e. close-range detpacks, "selfish" uses of health&ammo). There's no real incentive to play the engineer like a medic (there may have been plans to provide incentive; some of the game scripts indicate this), and any class with health&ammo drops- regardless of loadout otherwise - becomes somewhat "stacked"-feeling.

The bottom line is that "common" sense is only really obvious after-the-fact. A popular class will only ruin the game if you let it. Engineer is a great "fall-back" class for me - I use it if I'm behind on points or if the team is in a tight spot in an interior battle - but I have a lot more fun playing the other classes (jet troopers, snipers, the occasional magnaguard or heavy). They're all effective in their own way.

I think balance in this game is subjective, as it really depends on how you use each class in it's most effective way for example, engineers obviously have the advantage in close quarter battles, but on a larger map like Hoth snipers do. The same can be said of rocketeers, and every other class. I really think its dependent on the map environment you play in.

I tend to go for the harder plays. Close range sniping against engineers and heroes, playing as bothans, the escape type moves in the Unit Moves vidoes I made, etc... I'm trying to play more soldier, but I always end up switching to sniper. I prefer being more agile. If you've ever spec'ed me at a map start, you'll almost always see me directly going for the enemy's starting CP. I prefer those crazy (and extremely deadly) runs. I try to sneak around behind the enemy, even if I have to fight through their main hallway to do it :?

I use the rocketeer against vehicles or if there's a chance I can get remote rocket.
I play Jedi and engineer the least. I really suck/have little experience with them.

Ignore the people complaining and have fun. It's always great to take out a fully awarded engineer as a sniper in a close range fight. Though it normally takes quite a few attempts...

I should go for more pistol awards...

Well, I've been trying the rifleman and sniper only advice of some people here. I need work, but they are less frusterating. Although they are a tad more boring than being a rocket trooper, but its worth not having capillaries pop. :P

Are there newer patches than 1.1 that have a lot of players on them?

Though you might want to download the unofficial version 1.3 patch by Zerted, it lets you access a lot of modded content these days.
