Ralltiir: Swoop Race

Post by Maveritchell »

The core world planet of Ralltiir was a planet known best for its advanced banking industry and other financial institutions. Less well-known is the swoop circuit that flourishes in the marshy, underdeveloped regions. Due to the presence of both light marshes and hilly terrain, these areas are ideal for the swoop tracks that have become so popular as an escape, following the days of the Jedi Civil War and the later assault of the Sith Triumvirate.

---

This map is the first of a kind, of which hopefully more will follow. It will use my "race mode" script (although I'm still considering allowing other modes, like conquest) and, as you might guess, allow for a large-circuit swoop race. It features, as the racers' swoop of choice, this modified swoop bike:

Image

It's tentatively set up for a team of 10 racers, who all compete for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. places. The other team will be an "observer" team, with access to in-track cameras (and perhaps some "surprises" for the racers, of a more lethal sort).

---

What I'd like from any interested parties: I can definitely do this myself, but I'd love to see some other people get involved. As an homage to the recently finished RvB series, I'm going to be making a Blue (racer) team and a Red (observer) team. Each racer/observer will be using the ep3 clone trooper model, and I'd like some variations on a theme as skins. So, if you feel up to it, make your best blue-hued (any design you feel so inclined towards) and/or red-hued clones, post them here, and I might use your skin in the map! Thanks to any contributors, and suggestions are always welcome!

Shizam! Sounds awsome.
All this KotOR (even inspired) is great. *basks in the glory*

If I was any good at skining, I would post some. Alas.

Hope you have better luck then my failed attempt at a swoop bike race map, I couldn't fix my collsion problems which screwed up some of the tight turns in the map.

PS: i'll upload some skins for you later

EDIT: forgot to say, if you've added the hp nodes for the engines, use a damage effect that starts at 100% health with an engine effect, if you understand o.O

theres a picture of what I mean here; http://www.gametoast.com/index.php?name ... c&start=15

Thanks! The way I see it , "gimmickyness" and originality are really the only things that keep people playing maps. My favorite maps have been the most different from regular BF2 (a la archer01's OFM), and I figure if I want to have a memorable map, it needs to have something that sets it apart.

Actually, my bike does have a few minor collision issues, but nothing that's too serious. I'm sure it helps that my map uses terrain whereas it looks like your map was predominantly modeled.

Edit: Oh, I see what you mean, Penguin. No, fortunately I've not got issues like that. There are some soldier collision issues wherein the very back center and a small section on the wings you can "walk into," and if you pull too tightly into a turn the very edge of your wing looks like it sinks into the mountain, but nothing that impedes the bike from working normally.

Yeah, my map was out of models to be like the Taris Underground racing area, the bike bobed up and down as it traveled along the tunnels lol, and if it crashed into a unit or another vehicle they got squashed by the collison and died...

Actually, we had this conversation about a year ago, when I was working on something else. So yes, they do have an engine effect (made by AceMastermind). It's that sort've "shimmer" you see around idling jet engines.

Some questions,
How many swoop bikes are out at a time?
Will there be locals that shoot at you from clifftops?
And... will there be a secret reward like Abraxas?

Ten racers, ten bikes. No locals, the "shooting from hilltops" will be the job of the "observer" team. And there definitely won't be anything as elaborate as Abraxas' easter egg, since only space maps are big enough to really hide stuff. Jury's still out on whether I'll make some sort've hidden goodie, though.

This comes from having seen 2 pictures, which focused mostly on the swoop bikes?

Regardless, I do have a lot of filling out to do in ZE, since at the time of the first post I had only about 1/8 of the track decorated and none of the scenery. However, all the tough stuff is done (coding, modeling), so it's not too too much work.

A large part of the map is learning how to effectively "power-slide." Otherwise, hover vehicles have a tough time making high-speed turns.
