Alderaan: Lakeside

Post by bobfinkl »

Hello there Gametoast, I know it's been a while since I last posted here but with a new issue involving restarting my computer after each playtest of my map progress has been slow. Nevertheless I have this map nearly completed and well, I'll let the pics speak for themselves.

This map has both cw and gcw, modded and unmodded sides.

Map is 95%
complete, progress is slow though due to the annoying error mentioned above.

Fantastic work, bobfinkl. The mountains in background look great, except they're a bit "lowrez." They don't happen to be part of the skydome texture, are they? I think they would really benefit if you added them in the same manner the mountains were in the stock Hoth map. Only a suggestion. Keep up the good work! :)

The Kashyyyk huts stick out like a bunch of sore thumbs, but the overall atmosphere is good.

The mountains in the background look blurry (as mentioned previously) and the shore of the lake looks jagged and unnatural at places, but other than that, the map looks great!

Looks Awesome bobfinkl! The only suggestion I have is to add a fountain in the middle of the lake. Keep it up! :)

I think it looks better and more natural without a fountain. Very nice! :D

Looks fine in terms of appearance, but like the others said, lowrez skydome is a real downer. Kashyyyk huts don't make a lot of sense; out-of-place stock props really stick out.

You've made a handful of maps now that seem to be rinses-and-repeats of the "forest" map. Without taking away from their technical polish (because they do look pretty decent), I'd like to know what's new/original about this one.

Thanks for all the positive comments everyone.

As many of you have mentioned the sky is rather lowrez, I have tried the suggestions you have made and everything I could possibly think of to make it not look lowrez. But no matter how hard I try it never changes without compromising the rest of the sky, although I did source the skydome texture directly from a scene of episode 3 and its very high-rez.

The Kashyyyk huts, I used the one object I thought could fit in best with what I had planned for the map, buildings with interiors to them and somewhat natural. I would use other buildings but no stock asset I know of would fit better function-wise. If anyone knows of a released asset I could use that is similar in shape to the Kashyyyk huts please tell me.

I'd think it wouldn't be so much a rinse and repeat of a forest map this time, but as it is a bit of a matter of opinion, and I am unable to describe it effectively you'd simply have to test the map out for yourself to know.

First and foremost: Wow, your forrest looks pretty!
Without wanting to advertise myself; I made a skydome object once that you can use to create an undistorted mountainrange:

Oh and what should the huts look like, do you have any reference images?

Looks good...think I've said it before but your good at the whole forest thing.

Just out of interest, have the pics been edited at all? If not, what's with the black edges to the leaves? looks a little odd.

looks like a must-download !
one thing that would make it even more awesome: low/small foliage on the ground and probably new higher resoluted groundtextures, same for the treebark. i could probably help you out with that...

I sent you a PM, bob, but you may not have noticed, or been online since i sent, but I would love to beta test this map, and i agree with darth D.U.C.K., again. And i could help with Hi-Rez textues too, not trying to take away your work D.U.C.K. :P your map is good, with loads of potential( i just wish i could see it up close.."hint"hint") 8)

I would love to beta too. I've beta tested some of your previous maps and they were all really well done.

Will this map feature Mav's Dark Times II mod?

That would be a good idea, but I think I have enough as-is with 2 different side choices.

Not necessary for you to do, but that'd be great if you did. That (high-rez ground textures) actually was part of the 5% of things I had planned left to do.
Sky_216 wrote:Just out of interest, have the pics been edited at all? If not, what's with the black edges to the leaves? looks a little odd.
No they haven't, the black edges just about always happens on my computer, but if you mean a larger contrast for the leaves in general, that was done purposefully with a certain odf property in the leafpatch.odf (not hard to find, but I can't remember exactly right now).

That will be incredibly useful, thanks. The huts as I'd prefer them to be would be similar in visual style to what you see in Mav's Dantooine, but what I meant from before is that the buildings needed interiors open, and to be shaped (nearly) exactly like the Kashyyyk huts.
