Portals/Sectors and flyer splines

Post by Teancum »

Is there anyone out there familiar with building portals/sectors and flyer splines that could give some tips and tricks? I'm rebuilding Space Coruscant, Space Mustafar and Space Kamino (which techinically exists, but was very unfinished and had no collision). I'm building a new map, positioning ships, then loading both the original level and my new one together. I then take down coordinates, move my ships closer to where they should be, and repeat the process.

Long story short it's a rough process, but I'm getting close to where I need to be to start with sectors and portals. I know others have had issues with it, so I wanted to see if anyone had any tips (the last time I tried when I opened a door to a critical system all I saw was space until I walked in - then the room finally appears.

Oh, and flyer splines - ugh - are they as frustratingly time cunsuming as I assume they are?

You need to make sure that you have transitional sectors to get what you want to work, but really, there's no reason you should need to have portals or sectors for space maps. They have so little in the way of internal architecture, and most of it moves out of any draw distance quickly anyway (since the distances are so large).

Flyer splines are easy and quick; I don't know what you are particularly concerned about, but here is a quick overview from the FAQ:

Flyer splines are more of a pain to read about than they are to setup, in my view. You're just making a C-R path and giving the nodes properties. The flyers have spline related odf properties, too, but it's not all that complex. As long as you plan out what you want to see happen, it should be fairly easy.

Thanks guys, that's exactly what I needed to know about flyer splines. I'll look into the sector thing once I get a little closer to exact locations. Originally I was going to replace the lvls themselves, but it's much easier and smarter to make 'look alikes' and use them only for Assault/CTF.
