Vindictus

Post by conqerer2 »

I was going to post this in the free games section, but the post wound up being way larger than I had originally expected. That, and it has flawless multiplayer.

Vindictus. Totally rocking game in open beta, by Nexxon. Why it is awesome: The Source engine. in a non-Valve produced game. It's like Zelda with physics mixed with Brawl and a destroyable environment. I know that doesn't sound that great, but I feel it is best explained through examples. and pictures. Say you're being attacked by three enemies. Pick up enemy one, throw him into enemy two, killing them both. Grab enemy three, throw him into a pillar. Said pillar collapses, burying enemy three and killing him. Now comes the cool part: You can grab any piece of that pillar not deemed (by the Source engine) too heavy, lift it up, and either (a) throw it at other bad guys or (b) using it as a melee weapon to hit them with. I've included some screenshots, mostly because the website is incomplete for now, as the game is in beta. The game can get fairly... graphic at times. The best part is something Nexxon generally fails horribly at though. Most items attainable with real money are available without paying. The only things only available through paying are all aesthetic. There are two other character classes, both female. A mage named Evie and a balanced character called Fiona. I prefer the only male, Lann. I have an extremely low-end laptop, but if I turn down the graphics all the way I can play it lag free. http://vindictus.nexon.net/. All screenshots are of Lann.

Opening menu. I turned down all the graphics options, so the water looks weird.

The in-game town area. Where you do your traveling.

This also includes some platform elements. This is an early on, fairly easy to complete one.

Using the smash attack of a barrel I grabbed off the ground. Yes I missed horribly.

The Source engine lets the game detect where a secondary weapon lands when thrown. In this instance, it's a spear. If you hit the boss in the legs, it knocks him over. in the arm, he drops his weapon. in the head, massive damage.

Sadly, there really aren't many blood-free aspects to the game.

A standard finishing move. That's another person playing as Lann in the back, with different armor and weapons.

My personal favorite shot that I got. I grabbed the enemy, and the game performed a move (pictured below) that normally only happens when you're next to a wall. Deals high damage regardless of how it's performed. The cinematic camera rocks too.

The afore-mentioned wall finish. For some reason, the enemies light up when you attack them. Zelda did that too...

I did manage to get him with that barrel the second time though. quite effectively.
More info. fairly in-depth guide to gameplay.

So far, I've only played as Lann and Evie, but I'll give information on what I know so far. Lann is the offensive character in the game, and my favorite. He wields two swords, and unlocks an ability which allows him to strike hundreds of times in rapid succession, followed by a powerful finishing blow. This move is referred to in games as the Thousand Needles. Even before this move is unlocked, he is a powerful character. I'm not sure if Fiona is able to grab enemies, but I know Evie is not. Lann can grab enemies and perform one of three actions. He can throw them, hit them, or perform a finishing move. Depending on your location and the health of the enemy, this move may not actually finish an enemy, but it will always deal extreme damage. And it looks cool. You can see examples of the different finishing moves available above.
Evie is the games support character. She shares attributes with both the standard mage and priest class. The fragility and healing powers of the priest combined with the god-like powers of the mage. Unfortunately, these God powers require both an ability to resist seizures as well as a fast processor. This is illustrated perfectly in her starting ability, fireball. I call it the lag-bomb. Seriously, you can disconnect party members by using this. literally lagging them out of the game. This sort of killed her for me, took all the fun out of having awesome powers if you can't see them. Or drop your fps to 3. She uses magic to lift destroyed objects. Her power, (Which they overplay in the videos. very graphically impressive.) similar to Lanns Thousand Needles, is a gravity reversal move. She lifts all visible enemies and objects off the ground, then smashes them back down. killing them all. The lag bomb dissuaded me from playing as her long enough to unlock this.
From what I know of Fiona. She has a sword and shield. the shield blocks about 90% of recieved damage. The shield can be destroyed after it receives enough damage.
That's about all I got. Personally, I love the game.
