Star Trek

Post by Karnage »

Why has no one made a topic about this yet?
I admit it, I'm a Trekkie...to some extent (Generations).

Anyways...to the point. I'm sure you've all already heard about the movie, but whether you're interested in it or not...go see it NOW! Definitely will be one of my favorites for the year.

Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 96...and I have to agree. It was pretty stinkin' awesome.

Whether you like anything about Star Trek or not, you'll seriously enjoy this movie.

If you haven't seen the trailer for it already, you can view it here.

The people they chose to act for the original series characters did amazing jobs in both acting and similarity to the originals. Along with the acting, the storyline, although some Trekkies may question the accuracy at some points, is well done. Abrams did a great job in introducing a new perspective for a new Star Trek story. The CG was very well done as well.
Hidden/Spoiler:
I did not however agree with his choice to give Spock as much emotion as he did. Especially with the whole infatuation with Uhura. It's just not how I think of Spock.
I think the best choice for Abrams now is create a Star Trek TV series followed by movies here and there. A sequel wouldn't do it justice.

Now, what did you think?

I'm not a Trekkie fan at all and I loved it. The cast is great.

9/10
Hidden/Spoiler:
Better than any of the prequels.

The casting for the movie was fantastic.
"Gabriel Gray" looks the spitting image of a young Spock with that hair cut and the ears.

The introduction of "Bones" was great, and he captured the character well. "I'm a doctor, not a damed physicist".

Is it just me, or was Chekhov smarter in this than the series?

I loved 'Scotty', though he may have been alittle too silly.

FX were great, I liked the scene where they come out of warp on the maiden voyage of the Enterprise. (You'll know if you saw the movie.) Awesome scenery. I wasn't wild about the look of the ship interior though, it seemed to clean and unlike the original.

Great movie though, I've heard that they have already green lighted another.

From what I heard, Star Trek fans overall thought it was ok, but wasn't really true to the whole style of Star Trek (including numerous incongruities like Vulcans having emotions), and anyone who wasn't a previous Star Trek fan loved the movie.

I'm planning to see it today.

I haven't seen the movie, but I like the series (generally, with the exception of DS9, I just couldn't get into it as much as the others.) My favorite is Voyager, followed closely by TNG.

I saw the movie and i rate it 10/10...
one of the best movies i've ever seen and plus the fact that i am as close to a trekkie as one can be without dressing up for comicons or dismissing people with "live long and prosper"

but that movie only had a few flaws with the series...
Hidden/Spoiler:
such as 2 planets that are destroyed that show up multiple times in many of the other series that chronologically come later... and Spock's mother. i know it was necessary for the story, but she is alive in 2-3 TNG episodes...come on...
however, such discrepancies are easily explained (in true Stre Trek fashion) by a simple parallel universe paradox.

also, proving that im a trekkie: Vulcans DO have emotion, they just spend their entire lives trying to block it... which is sad because at the end of their lives they become senile and cannot repress emotions*, which are apparently stronger for vulcans than most humanoids.
*Star Trek: The Next Generation. Episode: "Reunification part 1" Season 5. a scene shows Picard talking to Sarek about Spock just before Sarek dies.

there is no problem however, (for me at least) because young vulcans have not learned to supress their emotions. there are some episodes of voyager that go into that.. cant remember off the top of my head...

anyways that movie is great, and as a star trek fan i initially thought that it would have to much action and not have enough "cerebral" things in it as star trek should... meaning i thought it would be a bunch of booms with no real regard for the storylines. I was happily mistaken. (the Kobayashi Maru test made my day!)
GO WATCH IT NOW! even if you have already! :D

Great movie, but there were a few scenes which could have easily been left out.
(AKA the makeout scene)

It bothered me that those scenes really had next to nothing to do with the movie. I realize that it showed that Kirk was a trouble-maker, but that was already well shown, and it could have easily been shown in other ways. Completely pointless scenes except to appeal to the sex-hungry society we live in.
