Where do I start on making mods

Post by Armordude91122Cute »

Hi, i'm new to modding Battlefront 2 but I wanted to know where to start with because I wanted to make a conversion mod like new eras, new maps, new models, and possibly new modes. What programs are used to make these? Sorry if a topic like this already exist, i'm just new here. Battlefront 2 has been my favorite ever since I was little and ever since I saw mods added to the game, it makes me want to create my very own mod for the first. That why I wanted to ask you guys on where to start off. I was referred to Gametoast from BattlefrontJDGamer.

Welcome to Gametoast.
Start HERE. <-- FAQ/Everything You Need Thread
1. Download the modtools.
2. Read the documentation that comes with the tools! (thanks Zerted)
2. Watch some video tutorials if you're a visual learner: JEDIMOOSE32'S VIDEO TUTORIAL SERIES
3. Make a 'junk' map. This will be for testing ideas and figuring stuff out. This is an optional step but highly recommended so you don't mess up your real project.
4. Make a really basic map with some straight-forward changes. Try changing the sides, try placing some props and making a coherent level. You don't have to release the map to the public but this is a great way to learn how to walk (as Zerted said in the comments below).
5. Think of an idea.
6. Check the FAQ thread to see if your ideas are possible. If you can't find what you're looking for there, do an extensive search using Gametoast's Search feature (as Noobasaurus suggested in the comments below). If you can't find any answers that way, then make a post in this forum asking for help.

Good luck, and happy modding! :)

Don't forget to search as well! Many questions have been answered in the past and can be found with a simple search.

After you download the mod tools (1) and before you start working on your ideas (2), read the mod tool's documentation and follow it's tutorials on creating your first map. Starting off on an awesome idea is like trying to go cross country skiing before you've learned how to walk. Technically you can do it and you'll learn to walk along the way, but it's so much easier to learn how to walk first. So start small, one thing at a time, and slowly build that up to whatever idea you're trying to do.

Good points by both of you. I should have given my response a bit more thought. I'll edit my post.

What about modeling, like lets say, I want to import my models into the game. How would I do that because I see some mods that have different models. Also, what modeling programs do you guys recommend like Autodesk or Maya.

What software you use for creating is mostly up to you. Check out the XSI/Modeling FAQ thread (in the CG/3D Modeling section of the forum) for more info on what is required to get a model into the game. I personally use Autodesk Softimage (formerly XSI) because I'm fairly comfortable using it, plus it exports directly to the correct format for BF2 if you have ANDE's XSIZE tools.
