Sudden crash
Will too many unused assets cause a map to crash?

Re: Unused assets
You can have the entirety of the modtools assets scattered throughout various subfolders of your data folder and it will have no effect. No file is "loaded" unless it is specifically requested by a .req file or one of its child files (which include things like an .odf or a .wld file that is loaded into a .req file).

Re: Unused assets
Well, I figured that would have something to do with my map crashing instantly when I spawn, because there were tons of assets I didn't use.Maveritchell wrote:You can have the entirety of the modtools assets scattered throughout various subfolders of your data folder and it will have no effect. I saved the error log, though:

Re: Sudden crash
Do a clean, manual one too if you want to go that far, remunge with just Common checked.
You don't need to check all the boxes unless you are creating custom sounds, shells etc, as a matter of fact after the first munge, unless you are changing scripts, most of the time you don't need the common box checked either, it munges a lot quicker that way.

Re: Sudden crash
I did that, and it continues to terminate when I spawn. I don't get an error message or anything of that sort, and the only errors I have right now are 4 texture errors.FragMe! wrote:Do a clean, manual one too if you want to go that far, remunge with just Common checked.

Re: Sudden crash
Most munge errors will crash the game (although I have a statue in the assests of a map that causes errors but doesn't crash, somewhat odd) You need to figure out what's wrong with those textures (make sure they aren't saved with RLE compression on).

Well then, guess I better do ANOTHER manual clean.sim-al2 wrote:Most munge errors will crash the game (although I have a statue in the assests of a map that causes errors but doesn't crash, somewhat odd) You need to figure out what's wrong with those textures (make sure they aren't saved with RLE compression on).
EDIT: Well, I did it, and it works, but all I get is a black void. No terrain, no sky, no nothing.

Re: Sudden crash
^this is NOT exactly true. The first munge will more than likely always have a couple of errors and all of my maps work great! anyway if its a character's texture it will just take that character out of your game. have you used any objects that you think might be a little suspicious? like the snowspeeder "prop" or the LAAT "prop".Most munge errors will crash the game (although I have a statue in the assests of a map that causes errors but doesn't crash, somewhat odd) You need to figure out what's wrong with those textures (make sure they aren't saved with RLE compression on).

I think it might have something to do with the grass props.

Re: Sudden crash
@SAMofBIA: I don't get munge errors on the when I munge a map completly (first time or after a clean). You must be lucky.
I hate to say it, but try another clean and see if the terrain comes back. How are placing the grass? Foilage or were you using those strange "editor grass" props? You should remove those because they could be the problem.

Re: Sudden crash
Do you get an error log? Not the one from Visual Munge but the modtools.exe one?

Re: Sudden crash
hmmmmm i wonder why your trooper is in deep space? its kind of strange. if you havent done anything really great with the map, i would suggest just making a new one. if you have done something good, or at least put a lot of time into it (besides the fixing it part) than you should keep trying. (not helpful ik, but its what i would do)
