I think Wu-tang are pretty good too. Finally, someone who doesn't hate rap and hip-hop.
@JackSkratch
I'm not a huge fan of "dark" rap, but some other groups you might want to check out are Jedi Mind Tricks (absolutely no connection to star wars
) and Army of the Pharoahs. They are rap, similar to 7L... but, in my opinion, much better. JMT is a pioneer in the darker side of rap.

This just doesn't seem quite the right phrase to use...JackSkratch wrote:Christian death metal bands
I know what you're talking about, I listen to that type of music sometimes, too, but maybe a better description would suit the genre better. Like "Christian Metal" instead of "Christian DEATH Metal"...

I used to dislike rap, but If you look at some of the non-mainstream artists, they are spectacular. Now rap is my favorite music. Some of the lyrics are amazingly creative and intelligent. It is mind blowing. I have never seen any other genre that embodies this or even comes close.

Re: What's your favorite Music Genre & Bands?
@Twilight_Warrior: I think it is apporpriate seeing as DEATH METAL is a subgenre of HEAVY METAL describing the musics sound, while CHRISTIAN is refering to the bands ideology and lyrics, therefore making CHRISTIAN DEATH METAL. I find just saying CHRISTIAN METAL is to general, considering the genres many subgenres.
@Fluffy_the_ic: I find those words to be rather ignorant of the genre. This may be because most young people have been raised in an era where rap has evolved into a commercial genre mostely based on dance music and "Southern Bounce" such as Flo Rida, Jibbs, and Soulja-Boy-Tell-'Em. These artists are only a small percentage of rap, and, quite frankely, are on the lower end of the spectrum, at least in this mans opinion. If you compare the rappings of Soulja Boy with that of, say, GZA the Genius of the Wu-Tang Clan, you could hear extraordinary differences in terms of vocabulary, prose, and "flow" (the deliverence of the lyrics). Likewise, if you compared a "beat" (which is the music the MC raps over) produced by Soulja Boy (who, as well as a rapper, is actually his own producer) to that of Wu-Tang's RZA (Also a Rapper/Producer), you'd find great differences in the tone, the drum patterns, and the sampling (the bits of other songs incorporated into rap beats IE: Iron Butterflies In A Gadda Da Vida's riff in Theif's Them and Hip Hop is Dead by Nas, Dead or Alive's You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)'s chorus in Flo Rida's Right Round) Hip-Hop is truely an artform, and there are all sorts of lyrical themes, including the party music of Soulja Boy and Flo Rida, the wordplay of Wu-Tang Clan and Tech N9ne, the Gangsta Rap themes of Jedi Mind Tricks and Mobb Deep, the storytelling of Slick Rick and Atmosphere, the horrorcore of Brotha Lynch Hung and Necro, the absract ideas of Aesop Rock and MF Doom, and even the nerd themes of MC Frontalot and MC Lars that you may relate to. The point I am trying to make is that before you judge an entire genre of music as "phail", it would help if you examined the genre a little more then what you here played at school dances and the like.
Woah, that took awhile.

Re: What's your favorite Music Genre & Bands?
@Skratch: It was just an opinion. You may disagree, but I used to like rap. I don't anymore. Now it just annoys me. Not musical enough to me. I like the stuff that doesn't have only a beat, and a majority of rap songs I've heard don't have enough melody to satisfy me anymore. I'm only 14, I get ridiculed for hating it a lot. And there are just too many innapropriate rap songs that kids use as an excuse to swear and stuff at my school. Take Right Round. Read the lyrics. Let's just say that you have your reasons for liking rap, I have mine for not.

Re: What's your favorite Music Genre & Bands?
I dunno, I got into rap because of the lyrics. The wordplay and depth, I find, is unmatched by any other genre.
Some Lyrics that *might* make you respect hip-hop a bit more.
There will be some bad language, but if it doesn't bother you check out the lyrics.
Black Star - Thieves in the Night

Mos Def - Know That
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/mosdef/knowthat.html
The Roots - The Next Movement

The Roots - 100% Dundee
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/roots/100dundee.html
The Roots - Guns are Drawn
http://www.lyricstime.com/the-roots-gun ... yrics.html
Last Emperor - Meditation
http://www.lyrics007.com/The%20Last%20E ... yrics.html
@JackSkratch - check out Last Emperor's Animalistics, he and GZA both have crazy skills. The premise of the song is awesome, but I couldn't find the lyrics.
Last Emperor - Secret Wars
http://www.lyricstime.com/last-emperor- ... yrics.html
Blue Scholars - North by Northwest
http://lyricwiki.org/Blue_Scholars:North_By_Northwest
Dilated Peoples - Shape of things to come
http://www.musicsonglyrics.com/D/dilate ... lyrics.htm
This is just a sample. There are tons of songs with lyrics like or even better than these.

I personally prefer music without lyrics...i dunno why, it jsut appeals to me. Here are a few samples:
Anything - An Endless Sporadic
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTGI3HtKewQ
Sun of Pearl - An Endless Sporadic
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KzwUVwsch8
Satch Boogie - Joe Satriani
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1MJAyRN3Lg
Cliffs of Dover - Eric Johnson
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55nAwmVLQSk
And of course...SSB Brawl OST. If admins allow, I'll post link for download...it is completely legal if you just use it for listening purposes only, but admins plz remove link if u see this as unnessecary here
*WARNING: I wasn't sure how the torrent worked, so I d/l'd them one at a time, which requires multiple downloads and a lot of wait time in between (abt 90 mins between each 20-30 min d/l). The entire Soundtrack is about 1.1 GB*

I couldn't agree more. You don't really sem to need too much skills to rap. I also think it's a poor excuse to vent anger...Fluffy_the_ic wrote:Rap is phail
Also, I'd put down my fav music genre, but I'm the only high schooler in America who doesn't listen to music whatsoever.

Re: What's your favorite Music Genre & Bands?
@Kaos4: Yeah, I heard the Last Emperor on the joint he did with KRS-One and Zach de la Rocha, and the fact that he just might have been hotter then both of them is enough to prove he is extremely formidable, but for some reason I haven't checked out the rest of his discography. I will do so when time allows.
@Fluffy_the_ic: There are plenty of rappers who have catchy production and clean rhymes to match. If you do a little digging you might find some interesting stuff. MC Lars is great: he has catchy production (Some of the songs on his new album have backing by Wheatus, Suburban Legends, and Paul Gilbert, for example), coupled with generally clean lyrics about stuff like Gaming, 3rd Wave Ska, Williamsburg Hipsters and Guitar Hero. Lots of people who say their not into rap love this guy. Check him out!
Oh, and heres another band I dig: Modest Mouse.

My newest favorite singer -Richie McDonald, used to be the lead singer in the band Lonestar, but they broke up and now he's singin' some good Christian songs. Go look him up on iTunes or utube.

Skratch! I haven't seen you around in a while! Good to see you again!
And yes, I do like Becoming the Archtype - they're a sick band. I'll be sure to check out their new album.
As for rap, I do like it. I don't really like the modern techno-rap so much though. And the swears and stuff. So I mostly listen to Christian rap, which doesn't have any of that stuff.
It bugs me when people insult a genre or band. Like, obviously, there are exceptions, where an artist completely sucks, haha (but even still, it's a matter of opinion). If you think an artist sucks, you don't have to make it a point to argue that they do suck - it's not like the person is going to end up agreeing with you. If you don't like them, you don't even have to say it. Or at least don't be critical about it - all it's going to lead to is an argument.
Lol, just a pet peeve, not meaning to put anyone down or anything. I just had to get that out.
Oh, and Christian Death Metal sounds weird to me too, but I can see Jack's points, and it makes sense to me.
