I'm not sure on that one. can be network traffic at the site you are downloading. Things you have to remember is the internet is not a straight forward architecture. To access your friends computer from next door, you might shoot to japan, egypt, california, new york, canada, belize, jamaica, australia, then next door. It can also be that windows sux. Now I have a question. Why is it my 54mbps wireless connection drop down to 1mbps when I'm streaming audio/video or p2p? I know it is not the distance from the router because it is only three feet from me and those activities are the only time it does that. Downloads and uploads are fine. It also disconnects my desktop (which is 1.5 feet from the router) any time a p2p is running, whether it is saving to that comp or not, just faster if it is. That's wierd.

BTW, visit http://www.dslreports.com , test your connection, test your settings (all under the tools link), and then tweak using dr. tcp and follow the FAQ. Should help solve a few problems.

I'm breaking the rule for bumping posts because I found a solution to the wireless speed drop I mentioned last year from a tech guru at UTD.

On XP do the following:
  1. Open Network Connections and right click on your wireless connection.
  2. Select configure next to your wireless adapter.
  3. In the properties section you will have four tabs, General, Advanced, Driver, and Resources. Click on Advanced.
  4. In Advanced, there is a section that says Property and Value.
    a. Select Power Management and uncheck Use Default Value and move the slider to highest.
  5. Select OK.
This works for an Intel 2200BG Wireless network card, but most card settings should be the same. Post here if something appears different than what I mention and I'll see if I can figure it out.

Do not worry, ShadowHawk, the "bumping" of the current thread is probably the only one I am considering as being "helpful" and especially "welcome", since I have equally get my hands down on a few Microsoft.com informations which provide details on how to work out "Technical Issues" related to "Wireless Network's Speed decreasing"...
Therefore, I think that consulting this Article might be rather useful for GameToast members facing the problems described earlier...

I think I'm having this same problem. What happens is when I download something (A mod map for example) from filefront or any other server my speed starts as 250 KB/ sec and then quickly drops off to 20 KB/ sec and lower. It drives me insane. It sucks so bad to watch your estimated time go from 10 minutes to 2 hrs. It used to be that it would start at 250 and stay there and maps would take like 10 minutes or less, but now the same downloads take 1 1/2 hrs. or longer. When I follow Shadowhawk's advice I can get to #4 and find the property/ value chart, but power management isn't on there...
( also I didn't really understand the article leviathan posted. Should i just go ahead and try what the article says anyway?) Thanks!

I think it has to do with prefectching of the file. 2-3 mbs of it will be dl before you choose the save directory. This bumps up the average kbs and throws of the reading.

Off-topic : [Matt_Man], be sure I have always attempted to post "helpful" and especially "relevant" threads / messages on GameToast Message-Board since the first day I have registered on it, which incidentally implies that the one I have inserted above might help you to work out the problem you are currently facing...
