Forums index loading very slowly

Post by jedikiller32 »

Hi GT-

I've noticed recently that the forums index page has become extremely slow in loading compared to the rest of the site, and it seems to me that it is the fault of that "show latest posts" thing at the bottom, which was not there a week or two ago.

To me, personally, that doesn't offer much benefit, and when I'm browsing here, I don't like having to wait 5-10 seconds for the most important page in the forum to load compared to the much shorter load times for the topics, forums, and pretty much everything else here.

If that could be optimized, removed, or just have it made an optional feature (don't quite remember how phpbb's templates work, but I think you can just edit one without changing everything), I personally would very much appreciate it.

Thanks!

Well, to be honest, I sometimes never come accross the index page. I always use "View active topics" to see if there's anything new going on. (except for when I want to see if it's somebody's birthday)

yeah, index used to take about 1-2 seconds to load, now it can take up to 20+ seconds.

The bump warning would be great, it'd be one excuse down for people who contiously bump topics. Topics Solved would be, of course, very usefull. Only someone would have to be willing to go through all the topics (note; I no one wants to, I'd be willing to)
Also, the anti-double posts would be a nice feature as well. When using slow internet connections, I sometimes accidently double-post as well.

Out of the above posted addons, I think the Topic Solved and ReIMG Image Resizer would be the most useful.

I thought I posted this a while back, but evidently not.

Some forums have a feature that makes it so that any topic that hasn't been posted in for over a month doesn't show up. I think that would be pretty helpful, as it would help decrease the number of topics that get bumped by ignorant people who don't read the rules.

But how would you be able to read tutorials, release threads, info threads etc. then?

I believe you can still view a thread if a direct link is provided to it.

Worst case scenario; FAQ thread/assets link thread gets deleted (there's probably a back-up, I know, but still), if that would happen, all the topics would have to manually be recovered. (or the script should temporaribly shut down)

It doesn't delete the topics, jsut hides them, and the setting can be changed for different periods of time, such as a week, month, year, ect.

Not to mention that this script may have a feature which would not hide sticky or announcement topics.
