If the point of this topic is to prevent this:
stardestroyer001 wrote:I suggest, to avoid this, we create a catalog of Map ID names so people don't accidentally choose the same name.
Then it is pointless because:
AceMastermind wrote:If you download a map that has the same 3 character ID as one you already have installed then you can just rename the 3-character folder for one of them without breaking anything.
That. It's not even possible to have every map and mod ever made in your addon folder anyway.

Go read off the list at SWBFFiles, that should have a good 75% of them.

Maveritchell wrote:Knock yourself out, but it's important to remember that not only are the map three-letter codes alphanumeric (which means you have about 40000 different potential map codes), but you aren't limited to three-letter codes (VisualMunge uses these by default, but you can edit your addme.lua to read your data from whatever folder you want).
Wish I'd known that earlier, but thanks thats quite helpful. :)

You guys know when you copy, if it finds a duplicate, it will ask to replace or copy. When it does that, just move it out and recopy.

Apparently Ace's post was completely overlooked, so I've gone a bit obnoxious with the text:
AceMastermind wrote:If you download a map that has the same 3 character ID as one you already have installed then you can just rename the 3-character folder for one of them without breaking anything.
My point? The three letter IDs don't mean much. As Ace said if someone has the same folder name (for example /AAA ) then you can just rename the one you just downloaded to something else (such as /AAAnumberTwo ) and the game reads it just fine - no issues at all. And of course Mav pointed out that the odds of getting the same map ID are fairly slim anyway - Using only letters and no numbers there are exactly 17,576 different combinations that can be chosen. Adding numbers into that mix gives 46,656 different combinations

That being said, have a blast cataloging if you want, but the reality is that #1-There are several hundred maps to catalog, and #2-It's unnecessary for the reasons pointed above. We won't lock the topic, we're just pointing out that its wasted energy.

Good idea. Also, please don't submit maps that aren't yours. [Padawan]Helkaan 's suggestions have NOT been added because it's not his/hers.

Question: Who moved this thread? Someone integrated the SWBF2 Catalog thread with this one. It wasn't meant like that, this thread is for adding stuff to the catalog so the catalog wouldn't be cluttered.

Yeah apparently everybody decided to post stuff here, you should have post a rule about this, and a link to the other thread

Without making too fine a point of it, that's not completely true. No essential functionality is lost, but you will lose any addon localizations for your mod. The reason for this is because every file in an addon map/mod is loaded relative to the location of the core.lvl (which is always located in MODID\data\_LVL_PC) except for your addon core.lvl. It can't be loaded relative to itself (that would make no logical sense) and consequently is loaded directly through your addme.script (munged .lua) relative to the location of the game's core.lvl.

Like you said, this is a pointless venture, but I see no reason to stop you guys if you want to tackle it. You may learn a little, and that's great - but know that your energies may be served better elsewhere. Your decision, though, not mine or the staff's.
Someone integrated the SWBF2 Catalog thread with this one. It wasn't meant like that, this thread is for adding stuff to the catalog so the catalog wouldn't be cluttered.
I merged the two threads, because users were posting in them concurrently about the same things.

I think for maps that have been released it doesn't really matter. I can't imagine every map author seeing this thread, and your not going to get a full archive if you wait for them to post their maps here. I can't imagine them minding either. I don't.
