Tron 2.0 Reviewed (2003 game of the year)

Post by Teancum »

What? You don't know what TRON is? Oh man! Go to your local library and get the TRON VHS. Watch it. It's a Disney live-action, but it's great.

So TRON 2.0 takes place about 20 years later. And it's glorious.

GAMEPLAY: 10/10
Seriously, it's been a looooong time since I've played a game this good. I'm kicking myself for not playing it sooner. It's so unique, especially for a first-person shooter, yet the game teaches you how to play as you go along. You visit locations inside computers such as the ENCOM mainframe, a PDA, a Firewall, the internet, a curropted (virus-filled) system and fCon's mainframe. Each area looks and feels unique. It's amazing. On top of that, computer geeks will get a kick out of all the little computer jokes. Your character can be upgrades with new "subroutines" or programs. These can be anything from weapons, to armor, to utilities such as virus scans and the like.

SOUND: 10/10
A few members of the original movie cast return to reprise their roles or to voice new characters. Rebecaa-Ramon Stamos lends her talents as well. The voice acting is flat out superb. Weapons and environmental sounds turn out just like you might imagine them.

GRAPHICS: 10/10
I'm sorry, but there's way to many games that focus on making things look pretty but have terrible gameplay. (Sorry, but Half-Life 2 is one of those for me) We obviously know that Monolith didn't skimp on gameplay, but it's obvious they took the time to get the look of TRON right. Cutscene and other animations are also extremely well done.

MULTIPLAYER: 7/10
Unfortunately this is where the game falls a little short. There's about 20 or so different biped character models used in SP, but only about 10 of those are available for MP. That's just unacceptable. MP consists of disc arena, team disc arena, and light cycles. While fun, there are very few maps and not much replay factor. The Xbox version, Tron 2.0: Killer App, remedies this somewhat with additional gametypes.

OVERALL 9.5/10 (not an average)
If you haven't played it, borrow it or get it from eBay, you WILL NOT be disappointed.

Yeah I was blown away. It's one of those I'll keep forever, like the original Jedi Knight.

Yeah, I liked Tron 2.0 as well. Do you prefer the PC or Xbox version? I loved Killer App.
