Rules that AI follow

Post by squipple »

I was reading the comments in this article :

http://kotaku.com/5271733/the-three-or- ... ewcomments

I thought they were funny, and thought you guys would have some funny comments on what rules AI seemingly follow in SWBF games.

Like:
Be psychic! Stand in one spot doing nothing until the player actually pulls the trigger aimed right at your skull. Then move at the speed of light to avoid the trajectory.

or

Be impossibly accurate at random! When the player is doing well, suddenly be able to poinpoint-accurately kill the player with one shot to the head from your pea-shooter.

7. If player is trying to walk through a door, stand in the doorway and don't move. This protects the player from danger.
LOL!

I'm a sniper, my task is to put a different kind of plasma into their heads, but it seems that everytime I have the perfect shot lined up, the bots start to strafe left and right like crazy and I can't hit them, I'm often annoyed enough to say aloud: "STOP. DANCING." while my shots land in random spots around the target. I don't understand how they do that.

Well, to add to the list of Rules the A.I. seemingly Follows In SWBF Games:

Be a godlike killing machine when using the Recon Droid: am I the only one who has a hard time trying to hit those pesky little machines? They keep evading my aim and always end up killing me with a short, puny burst of blaster fire; as soon as I use my own Recon Droid, they shoot it down in a matter of seconds. What's up with that?

Be able to score rocket-headshots: somehow SBDs always hit my head with those darn rockets, even when they are far away and I have plenty of space to evade it they somehow manage to hit me.

Edit: Oh, one more: If there's a ship, crash it.

I enjoyed the comment made to the effect of "AI need to cheat but not get caught." Yes, we all know that the AI is a cheating... you know, but it's important to realize that the computer has to cheat. It just ticks us off when we have to catch it in the act.

Indeed Mav. Like how Driodeka shields never seem as strong when YOU'RE the droideka, yet AI Droidekas are gods at maintaining shield strength.

How about...
If you get hit by a sniper bolt, turn around and run the other way. It doesn't matter if the bolt hit you in the side, turn 180 degrees and keep going.

Or maybe...
Work together with your fellow AI to form the perfect base-capturing strategy. Unless the human player is on your team. Then make HIM do all the work.

The essence of BF2 right there, gentlemen.

Maybe so, but it's great when you have the AI in, for example, AoE that don't use cheats (or so the developers claim) and yet get better with difficulty, though not to the point of surpassing what the human can do (making the lack of cheating seem all the more possible).

On the other hand, you have the higher levels in a game like Civilization where the AI don't cheat per se, it is just readily obvious that they get bonuses that the player doesn't get (like half the build time on things, etc.). That is the worst kind of AI I can think of.

Some cheating problems with the SWBF2 AI have already been alluded to. 1. Once the AI get a bead on you, you die rather quickly (autoturrets are the worst, followed closely by recon droids and the infamous SBD rockets). 2. The AI is omniscient, for example, in turrets, they will start to turn to face you when you are directly behind them if you fire a rocket at them, something no human could possibly do (or how they will always follow you around when you're at the base of their Mygeeto turret).

Turn off AI auto-balance.

Be a suicidal piece of [Diet Dr. Pepper] when the human player is firing rockets and get in the way. Especially TANK rockets. At TANKS.

When following the human, match his speed perfectly. Then as soon as he jumps over a pit, run into it.

Never, ever score a hit when the human is nearby and on your team. Otherwise, you have near dead-on accuracy and know how to move OUT of the human's firing pattern.

Leave a tank in teh middle of the asteroid on Polis Massa. 'Nuff said.

Strafe left and right in quick, flashy patterns, and when Player shoots you, change direction, but always keep your gun firing at Player dead on.

Snipers can shoot with their rifle up to 5 feet away, unless Player gets closer, then pull out pistol and shoot while backing up, then pull out rifle again.

Also, you can switch weapons while simultaneously firing them.

There is no wall, and you can get to the front door of the Naboo Palace. (I always find the last guys stuck in the same corner of the map)

SBDs can fire rockets like other troopers do their rifles. And camp next to an ammo droid.

Gamorreans can spawn wherever they dang well please, including right behind Player.

So true. For some random, non-sensical reason that happens a lot more on Mygeeto than in the other maps, every time you shoot at a concusion cannon with a rocket, someone in your team runs into your line of fire at precisely the right moment to be hit by said rocket. A dramatic effort to screw everything.

Speaking of Rocket-Launcher wielding classes:
Ignore the fact that you have a huge gun and use your pistol to shoot at nearby enemies.

Bothans - Never use time bombs.

Magna guards - Never use poison.

If you have a recon droid, use it. Regardless of the situation. Never detonate it.

If a player uses a recon droid, become an expert marksman and blow that thing out of the sky with one shot. (SWBF2 only. SWBF1's orbital strike recon droids worked at least 50% of the time)

If you're in a flyer, be totally unaware of anything around you other than a target. It's okay to smash into a building or capital ship.

Double QFT. I hate that I can never get into a decent vehicle turret and start blasting them out of the sky without my pilot slamming into a ship. (i.e. BFX space, the Droid Gunship double beam cannons kill just about anything in a few seconds, plus the fact you can fire somewhat independent of ship's direction, about a 150 degree range, and then they crash while you're on a killing spree.

Hmm, this one happened twice to me today: Engineers- run to an injured human player, throw him a health pack, grab it before he even has a chance to move, run away/stand right there staring at the horizon while ignoring his pleas for medical assistance.

Engineers clearly are complexed bullies with mean and sadistic habits.

Engineers: Give Jedi bacta packs, even when you should know they can only get health from killing enemies.

If the player mans a turret in a flyer, fly as erratically as possible to remove any possibility of aiming.

I see the AI cheat in BF2...

Use tricks in carriers / gunships.
