Re: Windows 7
Yep, and that's because Vista sucks. Want further proof? They went to the trouble of making Windows XP Service Pack 3 when they said they wouldn't even be supporting it in another year. Why bother with putting lots of people on a big patch like that if you're not going to support it soon.
Yet another reason for me to stick with XP.

Yep, it's going to be XP for me too until I see something from MS that works efficiently, it seems like every website I go to someone is having problems with Vista that didn't exist in XP, I guess MS might be trying to redeem themselves with "Windows 7".Teancum wrote:Yet another reason for me to stick with XP.

Re: Windows 7
Too bad for me, but the newer computers in stores here only sell Vista
Well, I've got one now.. Just make the best of it..

Re: Windows 7
In my opinion, if a computer has good enough specs(like my sister's new laptop), Vista is great. If you have a popcorn machine(like me) than stick with XP. Right now I'm running a dual boot system. I hardly use Vista at all.
It all comes down to the specs.
But personally I like Vista better than XP. Better features, it looks cooler and it's got DX10.
I really don't see why people give it such a hard time.
I can't wait for 7. It should be interesting to see what the minimum system requirements are.

Re: Windows 7
Compatibility, compatibility, compatibility. I'll give you the fact that Vista is pretty and gadget-filled, but if it can't run the programs I use all the time then it's useless. Couple that with the fact that it's absolute bloatware. A bunch of extras the eat away at your resources. Non-commercial computer builders are actually offering the option to have them put XP on your new system instead of Vista because it's so bloated. For example, when I'm running just Windows itself, I should be able to have zero strain on my graphics card. But they had to put transparencies, video backgrounds, the 3D Window scroller deal, all of that bloated garbage in there. Yes, I can turn it off. I know that, but it was never necessary in the first place.MasterSaitek009 wrote:I really don't see why people give it such a hard time.
Vista will not taint my system until it's bug-free and uber-compatible. Even then I'll need a really robust machine before I decide to run it.

Re: Windows 7
Maybe I'm just an abnormal case but, every single program I've installed on Vista either had a Vista version or just worked.
It does suck resources more than XP but I don't see that as a bad thing. I see it as progress. Would XP run on a 95 machine?
Probably not very well.
That's my view.

Re: Windows 7
Well hopefully 7 won't be a total flop like vista was. I'm kinda against windows in general, the only reason I think anyone still uses it is because of the compatibility issues with software. I'm dual-booting Ubuntu and XP right now, and the only thing on XP is SWBF2 and firefox.

Re: Windows 7
I saw this preview thing threw my iGoogle about it
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2314423,00.asp
... i doesnt look like anything special. thats all MS seems to do any more, just add more crap. oooo touch screen stuff... crap stacked on top of more crap if you ask me. instead making a bug pile of duty they should actually improve and take what they already have to a higher quality.

Re: Windows 7
Yep, that's my complaint with Vista. They need to stop adding bells and whistles and just focus on improving what's there. It's no different than the Conversion Pack. You add more stuff, you get more stuff that needs fixing. At some point to just need to stop adding stuff and focus on perfecting what's already there.

Re: Windows 7
I totally agree, because I can manually add whatever bells and whistles I want to XP and I can skin it however I like. (boot screen, logon screen, theme etc...) And yeah I hate how (virtually) nothing is compatible with it any more. {btw, where can I get XP on a laptop?}Teancum wrote:Compatibility, compatibility, compatibility. Re: Windows 7
Yup, I think SWBF2 is the only program I care about that I can't run under Ubuntu well (it sort-of works with WINE). That, and the fact that I don't want to take the time to organize my desktop is whats keeping Windows on my desktop (Ubuntu is on my laptop).tsurugi13 wrote:I'm dual-booting Ubuntu and XP right now, and the only thing on XP is SWBF2 and firefox.
For getting XP, Vista includes a section in the EULA (if you believe in them) that says you can downgrade to XP (of course, you still need to get the CD from somewhere...). Thats how companies like Dell are still selling XP and how Microsoft claims large amounts of Vista copies sold.

Re: Windows 7
What Teancum says really defines my concerns with Vista myself. I upgraded to XP service pack 3 a few days ago. I have various important things which may never work on vista. Plus it would cost way more money than I could be comfortable with spending due to the extra power I'd need from a computer to run it. And Vista has way too much security and other things about it that would restrict me a heck of a lot. And it has that big brother feel which tells you what can and cannot do. Thus forcing out of the way methods to circumvent those measures. It causes more trouble than it fixes. My mother who has used XP for years on her computer is now visiting a daughter of hers who has Vista on her comp. And my mother says she doesn't like it at all. Teancum, you got one good moral there which I learned is very important when I do modding with anything, That is never add new things until you perfect what is already existing! It makes projects much more organized.

Re: Windows 7
I was an early adopter of Vista, Vista Ultimate that is, and I've only had one incapability problem and one major problem. The incapability problem was a print but that was when Vista just came out and the second was my Windows Module Installer kept crashing and i couldn't install anything that required Install Shield. So the only solution M$ "tech support" gave was reinstall, which i did and I'm running fine. The nice thing was over 6 hours with them and it didn't cost me anything. XD.
I do hope Win7 does way better than Vista in all aspects, which by the bar Vista set I don't think it'd be hard.
After using Vista for 2 years I'm happy with, besides those two problems everything has ran smoothly. I prefer the Aero glass look and how Vista looks, but it wasn't a wow for me. Also it was VERY smart for M$ to release Vista SP1 free.

Re: Windows 7
For all you Vista Users, look at this product from Stardock:
http://www.stardock.com/products/tweakvista/
It's called TweakVista, and it lets you customize many aspects of Vista.
Unfortunately the free version is only a trial, but if It's as good as it looks (I have XP, so I wouldn't know....) it would probably worth the money (it's pretty cheap too, only $20)

Re: Windows 7
Vista is extremely buggy IMO. Just now the icon for my Recycle Bin has disappeared and won't come back, and I've had a folder on the desktop for the past two months with no name that is impossible to delete, open or rename. I've had to change the icon to a transparent recycle bin and hide it behind the Windows Sidebar. Not being able to run Battlefront II is also pretty annoying.

Re: Windows 7
Did you run an upgrade install of Vista? I had a huge number of problems with games when I did an upgrade install, but after I was forced to do a clean install after a drive failure everything worked fine. I would NOT recommend upgrading to Vista due to the bugs created, but clean installs have created no problems for me. (Try just backing up all your data and reinstalling, that might fix the problem.. If you're willing to take a few hours of time..Rekubot wrote:Vista is extremely buggy IMO. Re: Windows 7
The early betas of Vista looked almost exactly the same as Windows XP. Give them a chance to get closer to the release date. And how would you know something sucks if you've never used it?
Or is it because it's made by Microsoft?
(And some of us would benefit from an explanation behind your arguments. I'm not saying they're invalid, but I am saying that an argument with absolutely no support isn't going to stand up very long.)
