CD Drive Dead...Cause of death?
My CD Drive has been broken for a pretty long time now. By broken I mean that it won't run any kind of discs. It's starting to get annoying. In the end I'll most likely have to get a new one but does anyone here know any reasons why this might have happened in the first place? Like, what would cause a CD Drive to just randomly kick the bucket? Thanks in advance.

I honestly have no idea. A few more details would be helpful. With the current evidence, I would be forced to conclude:
Suicide

It could be dust building up in it, but it's highly unlikely.

Well there actually isn't a lot to say. It began one day when I was loading some CD's onto my iTunes. Some of the songs were fuzzy and scratchy so I thought it was the discs but I later discovered they were fine. So, I tried putting the CD's on there again but the player was clearly struggling to play them. There were lots of pauses and gaps. Eventually, it just wouldn't play discs at all.

Before going into drastic measures, I'd suggest using a cd-drive cleaning kit. It's cheep and always good to use on a regular basis anyways. I'd tell ya to bring it over my house, but I wouldn't want you to get out in this weather and plus my house's a mess.
Another thing, most likely not it, but have you also changed brands of cd media lately (unless you are talking about manufactured music cds, then most likely the drive)?

ehh, I would skip the drive cleaner and just buy a new drive. 52x CD drives are around $15 and CD-RW drives are around $20. Cleaning supplies start at about $7.
I would recommend buying a $60 (after rebate) 250GB hard drive and storing all your CD/DVDs as images on there. But then, it costs a bit more and you would still need a working CD drive...
A weak link in a drive are the moters.
edit: I should point out these are CD and CD-RW drives not DVD drives. I didn't look up any DVD drive prices.

I'm not sure if I can post my problem here or if I should make a new topic but my CD-ROM reader is dead too. It's been a little weird for a few months (no games being able to auto start and such things) but yesterday it just went crazy. It started to go in and out and when I managed to keep a CD or DVD in it did'nt read the disc or anything.
I can't play any games or anything!! I'm going to die! (ok, maybe not, but things get a little boring)
Anyone know what to do to fix it? I'm not anything into building computers so I'd rather fix it then getting new one...
