Post by Moving_Target »

THe future of computers. And it's pretty cool. I'll post more later when i tryied out more stuff. But so after everything has been great. Pretty smooth install, not so much adjusting. I'll go more into detail later. But still it has great potential. Plus Firefox works!!!

It is really cool. I have Vista Home Premium. One great thing is using Windows Restore doesn't wipe your current data (I had a big English project on and I didn't lose it :) ).

Also great for sleep and resuming quickly. Plus Aero PWNS! :D

Cool. Yeah i got Ultimate. Hey have you found the Readyboost system? I'm still searching for that. I need to go from 1gb of RAM to 1.5 or higher. Did you do a clean sweep? or transfer. Right now I'm slowing deleting my Windows.old.

It came when I bought my laptop. ;)

Just plug in a jump drive (or iPod or any portable storage device) and scroll down the autoplay list till you get to 'Speed up your system with Windows ReadyBoost.'

When I first found out iPods could be used I was like, "Holy [wordnotallowed]! What if I had an 80 GB iPod video!!!!???!!! 81 GB RAM!"

But I doubt you can do that. :(

Ya can actually. the Vista Ultimate x64 or something with x86 can support 168gb of RAM. That's crazy!!! Can't remember the site nor what Home Premuim can support. but it's possible. Just buy a 120gb external drive.

If you want more memory, you can always increase your page file size. There is really no point in having 80+GB of memory. You will never need that amount, unless your programs have massive memory leaks. Anything you plug in as extra memory will be slower than a normal memory chip too.

The 32 bit Vistas only go up to 4GB of RAM anyway, and you would never really need that much for a 32 bit OS anyway cos you would prolly go for 64 bit so get up to 16GB or something crazy liek that but anyway those are for game developers etc. I wouldn't recommend a 64 bit OS for gaming anyway as in some benchmark scores i've seen, it showed a performance drop.

How well do games run on Vista? The ReadyBoost thing would be pretty good if you wanted to get yourself nearer the top end of the specs for a new game.

After finally cleaning out my windows.old (the folder with all you old computers files) got deleted (which was a pain) I'm going to start installing games today and test them out. Also I'm going to rename this thread

SWBF2 works fine but SW:RC gave me DirectX compatibility issues. I haven't tried running it in compatibility with Windows XP though so that might work. AoE 2 and AoE 2: TC also work fine with only a few minor issues (the water turns red sometimes). I haven't tried any other games.

BF2142 has been known in limited cases to have issues, but changing the compatability settings usually sorts it. I however have had no issues with conflicts and Vista etc...

Oh yes, I also had trouble installing iTunes until I changed the compatibility settings. Seems that fixes everything.

Games...

Battlefront 2 works fine, but it does run a little slower because of the new areo desktop(at least that what I'm assuming). I friend of mine gave me Warcraft 3 and it runs about as fast as on XP. Lego Star Wars II runs fine as well except it has the same problem as BF2. All in all it's not much better for games, and if you wanted to get Vista just because it's better for games, don't. Get it because it has Areo and multiboot XP with Vista and play your games on XP. :D

Meh, I'm not touching Vista with a 10 foot pole for at least another year due to bug reports and issues getting certain games to work on it.

Fine by me. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. But i do have to agree that Vista isn't the OS that you should run out and get. It's makes you say 'wow', but not "WOW"!

Agreed. But with stuff like this: http://www4.incrysis.com/screenshots/fever_3.jpg , coming from Vista, it may not be long before it does make you say WOW!
