Re: Proposal: Modeling Contest
I suggest (a theme) people make modelpacks that include models that can be easily and universally attached to each other. Like Legos

Re: Proposal: Modeling Contest
I don't wanna release source files for all to rape, a compiled side with screens or even short screencapture of the model in XSI should be plenty, and only a side to release for download for mappers to use. This would be cool to have since I've got a handful of models I've been working on lately, thinkin about getting back into modding this game again. I'm down like a clown.

Re: Proposal: Modeling Contest
That sounds best. Have folks post a wireframe and a textured render. That way everyone who builds their models gets to choose whether they release something. This ain't gonna turn into a "MODELERS: build stuff for me (under-the-guise-of-a-contest)" thread.minilogoguy18 wrote:I don't wanna release source files for all to rape, a compiled side with screens or even short screencapture of the model in XSI should be plenty, and only a side to release for download for mappers to use. EDIT: Ah, I see Maveritchell and FragMe! have already covered that. Guess I'm getting slow.

Re: Proposal: Modeling Contest
I think that this is a great idea. Also I support the idea of having at least two different categories of experience. Also i got an idea, the award might be a rank like: "Winner of Weapon Model contest" or something, but that is for the staff to deside. Also how many models can you use in the contest? One in all the categories or only one model in one category?

Re: Proposal: Modeling Contest
that would ahve been a question of me too
and can multiple people apply with one model? (can they make one together?)
and can you enter odfs or a side for the model too?

I don't think multiple people should work on one model, you never learn and get better at your weak points by doing that.

Re: Proposal: Modeling Contest
How about we create a new topic in the official contests forum, with a revised set of rules.
Maybe people could submit more than one model, but only one per category. Like one building, one un-animated prop, and a vehicle.

Re: Proposal: Modeling Contest
I think that before we assume a lot of people are going to do this (if it ever actually happens), that we should base the format on only a relatively small number of people entering. Thus any "categories" should be something along the lines of large models and small models, that's all, maybe a category for animated models, but seriously, how many people are actually going to animate their model (though some people do crazy things for contests to win a trivial prize). Also, someone more "official" should run this, in my opinion, at least an experienced modeler.
Before any new thread is started, I think it would be best to finalize any rules here or through PMs to staff. I don't think it's necessary to litter the forums until a thread can be made saying, "Here are the rules, you have X amount of time, post you submissions below."

So is this happening or what? I've been modeling some things that could be entered that I'm gonna try and get in game.

Re: Proposal: Modeling Contest
I already told you, in this thread, what our stipulations would be. You're welcome to make whatever rules you want, because the staff isn't going to make the rules or set up the contest for you (as it would appear; no staff member has expressed interest in this thread in doing so). We'll let you know if everything is ok, but this is not in our hands insomuch as organization is concerned.Gen.Kenobi wrote:Frisbeetarian wrote: Before any new thread is started, I think it would be best to finalize any rules here or through PMs to staff. *You Must subimit your model in before the submission time ends.
The submission time will be in showed when a the cotest apear and it'll have the maximium time of 2 weeks.
*The max poly count is the stardard Star Wars Battlefront 2 game.
*Categorys:

- Ground Vehicle
- Air Vehicle
- Capital Ship
- Normal Building
- Armed Building
- Turret
- Weapons
> Heavy Weapons (ex: Rocket Launchers/Granade Launchers)
> Riffles
> Pistols
> Melee Weapons
> Support Weapons (ex: granades, mines)
*Models need to be texturized
*Show Wireframes (rule out fraud and to grade efficiency)
*Textured and Untextured Views for renders
*No more tham 1 entry per user
*No more than five images per post.
*In game screen shots are appreciated, but not required

Everyone agree with this rules? Anyone suggests a new one?

Re: Proposal: Modeling Contest
I think that just a 5000 polygon limit is fine for anything except props.Gen.Kenobi wrote:*The max poly count is the stardard Star Wars Battlefront 2 game.
Preposterous! You by no means need thirteen categories. I already said that two would be fine, but at most, there should be no more than the categories stated by the art_guide with the addition of weapons (so that's five (5) categories).Gen.Kenobi wrote:*Categorys:
- Player Character

Etc.
You really only need at most two screenshots. One should be a four way view in your modeling program of choice, with at least one being wireframe and at least one being textured. Who cares about untextured view? If you have another picture, it should be an in game screenshot.Gen.Kenobi wrote:*Textured and Untextured Views for renders

Ridiculous! Once it's submitted, it's done. If they submit it early and want to go back and change it, they should just realize they shouldn't have submitted it so early and live with their mistake.Gen.Kenobi wrote:*Models may be edited once, post any updated model in a new post.
If you have more than two categories, this rule is out the window. Just have as Caleb1117 said and only have one submission per category.Gen.Kenobi wrote:*No more tham 1 entry per user
Keep in mind that a scoring system needs to be decided upon. I suggest a cumulative scoring system such as
Model Quality (60)
Texture (20)
Model Efficiency (10)
Animation (10)
For a total of 100 points. Once an individual has done this for all the models, they can submit the scores for each model by PM using a premade form.

Re: Proposal: Modeling Contest
Oh, if this does take place, do we have to make our own textures? Because I know that most of us aren't exactly skilled in that field. Since these models are for BFII, can we ues stock textures as bases if this does happen?

@Taivyx
I personally think that there is absolutely no need for more than one category for all weapons. You can just as well judge a gun against a sword in terms of how well it is modeled and textured. I like the idea of props being a separate category because they can be quite useful in maps and there don't see to be many just laying around.
@Fluffy_the_ic
You should be able to use any texture you want, just as if you were making this model for a mod or map.

Re: Proposal: Modeling Contest
well, i think there shouldnt be all types of textures allowed...
a photosourced texture looks with the same mesh as twice as good and detailed as a selfmade texture fo the most users here...
this would be hard to rate then...
and i would rate the texture higher, but that depends if you jus throw a colored tileable txture over the model or if you make one from scratch whic takems much more time

Re: Proposal: Modeling Contest
If rules for this are standardized, I'll give it a shot, and DUCK is right about the texture issues. Photosourced for the most part can look better then self made, but only if applied properly.
Hopefully, by the time this gets rolling I'll be better in ZBrush3.1, which is a great too for producing hi-poly models to bake normal maps off of.
