I'm about to host a modelling contest here in the comunity.
What do you guys think?


Proposed Rules:

*The model is to be compatible with Star Wars Battlefront 2.
*The model must be submitted in .msh format unless completely impossible, when .obj will be accepted.
*No more than five images per post.
*Animations must be provided where required.
*The model must have renders provided, showing front, back and sides of model. Similar to how most renders are produced for mods.
*In game screen shots are appreciated, but not required
*By entering this competition you are declaring that your model be made available in the public domain, and may be used in other modifications with appropriate credit.
*Models may be edited once, post any updated model in a new post.
*Models can be or not textured.


If the entering is good, i'll be starting a new topic with the theme.

Prizes:

The original idea was to be a signature, but how this forum doesn't acept it...Maybe some medals* to be showed in all competions with the winners.

Definitely add narrowed-down categories, the general area of competition is too broad to really accurately choose the "better model"

Also, I dont think requiring animations is a great idea. Very few people on GT are really good at animating with XSI, and mshex also makes animations impossible. Animations may also unbalance it in favor of people with MAX because it's better for animation. So I like the idea, but animations aren't the best idea. And as Taivyx said, that's too broad. Maybe narrow it down to, say, weapon models or building models.

Mr. Maverichel. Is not a point for making stuff for me and yes a challenge for the comunity. People can suggest themes here. See this modelling contest on this forum http://forum.cncreneclips.com/index.php?showtopic=32097 where things are more liberal. I just think would be a great idea for GT having something like this

Anyway, with no textures I have a slight chance to compete with one of my current models in Armed Building and Capital Ship.

That was my first thought as well, I was just waiting to see how far this would go


Anyway, for people wanting to get any kind of 3d content(animated or not) into SWBF2 there is no excuse for not getting it done, read THIS entire topic and there are plenty of tutorials on this forum and a lot of help in the documentation to get you on your way.

i generally like the idea of a modeling contest but i dunno, i would like strick rules more (either all textured or all untextured,whats the point of putting an untextured model ingame? (and isnt that the point of the contest?
a model for swbf2?))

can you enter more than one model?
my theme suggestion: playermodels
maybe something battlefront lacks models of... like guns or grenades or mines etc..

A contest would be neat.

Set a due date for the end of submissions
Define a category
Max Poly Count
Original Designs Only
Needs Texture+ info on Texture resolution, and types (color, bump, normal, specular maps)
Show Wireframes (rule out fraud and to grade efficiency)
Textured and Untextured Views for renders

Final Judging based on Texture quality, quality of model based on details, poly count, edge flow, and overall appeal.

Judges should be Moderators/Admins with Modeling experience and/or knowledge.

EDIT: Oh and Fiodis, What applications are better for what tasks are subjective, some prefer XSI, some prefer Maya or 3DS Max, or Blender or anything else out there. Heck, not even Maya can use Motion Capture (MoCap) data unless it gets run through Motion Builder for basic cleanup and export. Most Studios use multiple applications in their production pipeline because some applications are better then others at certain tasks (3D sculpting, Motion Capture and Environment Building are some specialized tasks), but for general 3D work and rendering, Maya, 3DS and XSI are pretty equal and preference is based on opinion.

There's a reason why I dumped max years ago for XSI and it was XSI's far superior animation tool set and the fact that XSI can handle far more polygons with less stress on your PC. Textures should be a must for this, I think animations probably should be required if the model needs it especially if the contest requires that it has to get in game.

I disagree with the Judges. I think it should be based in comunity vote. Because all can join. If you chose a Judge comission, they wouldn't be allowed to join, and that's not the point here.

First Choice gets 3 points
Seccond Choice gets 2 points
Third choice gets 1 point.

If there are a few people interested in this, then you're welcome to do it, but I'm going to exercise some veto power on some points:

Those are both bogus. It should always be the decision of the creator to release something, and having a contest is a really lame way of getting someone to make stuff for you.

Show me five people who are entering and who've put new animations ingame, by themselves, and you can have this rule (hint: you won't find them).

Also, it's worth mentioning that you should probably limit your models to programs like Max and XSI - Sketchup has too many shortcuts and it's tough to get an accurate comparison (also determining plagiarism is harder there too).

And just a word of caution, this is absolutely silly. There's such a vast gap between the really talented/experienced modelers here (AceM, VF501, et al.) and the rest that it would be unfair. If you break down this into a "newbie" and an "experienced" category it would be much more fair.

Agreed. And if someone can make a model worthy of being in SWBF1/2 but can't actually get it into .msh format then they may have some issues. The only exceptions to that rule would be walkers and player characters, and in that case the person knows they need XSI ahead of time.

Not to be nitpicky on words here, but I think you'll find that that's the phrase you're looking for.
"Narrow it down" could be mistakenly interpreted as produce more, further "narrowed down" categories.

Categories could include:

• Vehicles
• Melee Weapons
• Ranged Weapons
• Buildings/Props (includes turrets)
• Characters

I disagree, to an extent. Who is to judge who is eligible for the "experienced" category?

If it is judged by how long they have been modeling, then that raises the question of whether person A has indeed more "experience" than person B who has just recently taken up modeling, but has a faster pace of "model production"

Agreed. For example; I've been modelling for a while now, and I'm certainly not the best modeller around .

Besides, having just one category of contestants will encourage the new modellers to learn new concepts in modelling to be competetive with the more "expirienced modellers".

If you prefer the phrase "trim down," that is fine, but I don't think that in light of the context (not to mention the actual definition) there's much confusion.

Staff could decide that. We've seen lots of examples of the modeling of various users and I feel that we're pretty qualified to know who someone should be competing against. That being said, breaking it into "beginner" or "advanced" categories is only a suggestion.

Common..let's me go by parts....

1) There will be different contests with different categorys (about MODELS). Let's say 1 per month with diferent themes.

2) Again, if you think that i'm goign to request things for me. You're wrong. People may sugest themes too. Once again this is an way to get more HQ BF2 models for different modders that can't model well by themselfs.

3) Animations Problemans. Well... People model the model showing animations in the program. After the end of the submission time, a voluntier who has XSI 5, can ofter to export the model with animations. (anyone?) Or simple the model is done with animations for showcase purposes, them it goes in BF2 without animations, what would be prety sad .

3.1) A people can subimit his model in obj file. But msh is more welcome.

4) The model can be modeled in any programs of modelling, because this is a comunity contest.
Limiting program X or Y would limit the number of participants.

5) No different categorys (about MODELERS). The main point of this contest is having fun and providing more models to the comunity. Also a contest like this would encourage more modelers to keep improving their models. So i fully agree with Taivyx and disagree with Maverichell

And that's going to be a problem. I'm stipulating right here that if you want to have a contest it's fine, but you can't and won't make any sort of requirement that the models be released in any format other than .jpg.

You can set up whatever rules you want - after all, this is your enterprise - I'm just making suggestions that, in my experience, I feel will have it run best. You want to lump all the beginners in with the advanced modelers? Sure, ok, whatever. It's no fun to play a game, though, when you know you're just going to get creamed.

That's a rule! Who doesn't agree to make your model public for the comunity AND BE CREDITED when used in Mods/Maps, just doesn't enter it.

I know and i thank you for all your suggestions. Almost every contest will have a winner and a loser, so putting everyone togheter is a reason to incentive beginer modelers to become experienced and keep trying.
