OFM v1.0 - The RPG-ish Adventure

Post by archer01 »

So here it is (finally), version 1.0 of Operation: Ferret <out the> Master. I was thinking of going back and adding a whole bunch of extra stuff, but I had to stop and remind myself that this map was supposed to only be a prototype to see what could be done with the game engine. As such, the map may not have a huge selection of modes or custom sides like many other maps, but I believe (and I'm sure most of you will agree) that the unique nature of its gameplay makes up for that. Have fun!

- Short description -
Story-based adventure map that includes some RPG gameplay elements. For the full description, please review the copy of the readme posted below.

- Available modes -
GCW Hunt - OFM Story mode
CW Conquest - Normal Conquest with boosted unit count (2x)

Version 1.0

Description: Welcome to the map known as "Operation: Ferret (out the) Master". It is a mini story-based adventure that includes RPG style elements. This map was an experiment to see how far the game's engine could be taken through modding. Some features have been pushed as far as the game will allow, while others might still be able to go further.

!!!!!!----> VERY IMPORTANT: 'Friendly Fire' must be turned 'On', otherwise the dialog engine will not work and the story cannot be progressed.

!!!!!!----> To unlock conquest mode: Since few people seem to actually read the readme before playing and since map exploration is part of the initial impact of the story mode, the map has been setup so that conquest mode must be manually unlocked.

Unlock: Find the "<SWBF2Directory>\addon\OFM\unlock_con.bat" file and run it (double click). The "unlock_con.bat" batch file automatically replaces the "addme.script" file with the "realaddme.file" file. You could replace the addme yourself if you wish, but it is simpler to run "unlock_con.bat". Once unlocked, conquest mode will remain available for selection.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*** Technical Issues ***

If you are having trouble running the map (i.e. crash to desktop), try lowering the Lighting graphics option. There appears to be a bug in the game that causes it to crash on certain computer configurations. The large amount of water present on the map is the suspected cause of these crashes (unconfirmed).

Also make sure that all of the map's files are where they are supposed to be. See the installation section of this readme for the full list.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*** Background Story ***

It has only been a short time since the activation of Order 66 and the newly formed Galactic Empire has begun its expansion across the galaxy. Although the Emperor's plan was flawless, an unpredictable element has allowed a few Jedi Knights to escape their fate; and now with the help of a group of traitors that call themselves the Rebel Alliance, these fugitive Force users have gone into hiding. Although the hunting down and elimination of the fugitive Jedi is among the highest of the Empire's priorities, keeping the entire galaxy under control has been a strain on its vast, but finite resources. As a result, some of the assault forces sent to search for the runaways have been severely underpowered. This is where our story begins...

One of the fugitives has been tracked down to a remote, recently settled planet near the outer rim. The planet has only a few sparse colonies spread widely across its surface, and it is unknown if the Jedi is hiding in one of these settlements, or somewhere else away from the populace. Due to the lack of available resources, only a single StarDestroyer has been dispatched to hunt the Jedi down. The commander of the ship has had experience with Jedi knights in the past and quickly realizes that a single ship is not enough to blockade the entire planet. Unless the exact location of the target is know, any form of open search would be futile and allow the Jedi time to escape. The commander instead instructs his helm officer to come out of hyperspace well out of sensor range of the planet, and he then proceeds to select several of his best troops and issues orders for them to prepare for a mission of espionage.

You are one of the troops selected for the mission. Each of you will be sent to a settlement disguised as a traveling civilian. A stealth-ed imperial transport will shuttle you to a remote location on the planet's surface. Once there you will await the arrival of a salvaged civilian transport that will ferry you to your designated settlement. You will then begin collecting any information you can regarding the hidden location of the Jedi. If you happen to discover the fugitive's hiding place, immediately contact the StarDestroyer and inform command of the location. The battleship will then move into blockade position above the target and dispatch reinforcements to assist in the assault. Bombardment of the location using the StarDestroyer's main weapons is not an option; elimination of the target must be confirmed! Be advised, after you arrive at the settlement the salvaged transport will depart once you leave the platform, as it will be required to land the other personnel at their designated locations. From that point you will continue the mission on your own. Good luck.

*** Gameplay Notes ***

[Story mode]
- This map uses a checkpoint system. When you respawn, certain story related characters and enemies may be replaced based on where they were since the last checkpoint you reached. Certain objectives are also reset depending on checkpoints. Note: Sidequests and character XP are NOT affected by the checkpoint system. Only story related factors are.

- Use the "Talk" weapon (secondary) to open a dialog with an NPC. (Friendly Fire must be ON for it to work correctly)

- There is a basic levelup system in this map. As you eliminate hostiles and complete sidequests you will gain experience points. Gain enough points and your character will levelup and be granted a health bonus. Talk to the "Level Master" in the bar to find out what level your character currently is.
- The Blue number at the top of the screen is the player's number of "retries". The Red number is the remaining XP points needed to reach the next character level.

- To talk to the bartender from across the counter, you have to raise the targeting reticule a little bit above his head. Doing so gives the Talk weapon enough clearance over the counter to hit him.
- Short characters are sometimes a little difficult to target with the talk weapon, just change position a bit and try again.
- The water cave is escapable, but sometimes you have to jump a bit.
- The damage region at the mouth of the cave is there for a balance reason.
- No matter the conditions, the BlackSun sidequests are always available for completion.

[Conquest]
- The Sky Speeder bomb drops from underneath the craft and explodes a short time after landing on the ground (like a grenade). Three are dropped in a salvo.
- To reload/repair the skyspeeders, you'll likely need to land. The repair droids work very slowly (once every six seconds or so).
- There are only three spots on the map where the flyers can land.
- The hidden CP in conquest is selectable for spawn, you just can't see it on the map.
- Heroes are randomized at game start.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*** Request to the players (You) ***

Please do not discuss anything on the forums that might be considered a "spoiler". That includes stuff relating to the map's layout, specific story-important dialog, etc. On a similar note, posting screenshots is also not desirable, unless they too do not give any hints away. Please do not mention any specific details about the Fugitive Jedi online. Thanks.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*** What's left to finish... ***

- Nothing really. Just bug fixes if any show up.

----------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------

*** Installation ***
Copy the "OFM" directory into the game's "addon" folder.

Note: There is water all over this map so one of the easiest ways to improve the game's framerate would be to lower the water quality setting to at least "Medium".

Wow!
For a map still in the early stage this is very impressive, a nice change from the typical BF2 gameplay. I can clearly see alot of thought went into this map, very challenging, great work!

I wouldn't say it's in it's "early stage" anymore. :P

While it is true that it's missing the mode that battlefront is most known for (conquest), the story mode is basically done. Minor tweaks and bug fixes remain of course but I'm not adding much beyond that (except for the conquest modes of course, they're on their way).

Thanks for the comment.

Hey king, I sent you a PM regarding the glitch. The details might be considered "spoilers" and I'd rather not reveal too much on the open thread.

Yup, king found a bug alright! It's caused by starting one of the quests and then respawning before finishing a certain part of it.
This should fix it (Don't worry, the download is only 57KB): http://files.filefront.com/ofm_beta1_qu ... einfo.html

Thanks for pointing it out king.

I found him. After talking to the Bartender and then the Nomadic Jawa, you just talk to the Nomadic Hunter.

Hehe, not everything is always as it seems. :P

Just a secondary note: If you respawn before the next checkpoint is reached, the "talking quest" is reset based on it's state since the last checkpoint. Since leaving the town was not necessary to complete that quest, I didn't think it was a big deal. Just remember that if you decide to leave the town before reaching another checkpoint.
