because of tactics, he wanted it to be realistic... you dont always have to come right up beside the enemy and recieve a full broadside from their cannons. You want to get where you can fire the most powerfully, while providng the hardest target to your opponent.
Think of plane dogfights, youd want to get where the enemy cant fire at you while you can fire at him. Thats why they come in on angles to intercept the other fighter instead of comeing straight at him for you both to recieve a face full of bullets.

The frigate at the top I just thought that it would look cool.

As for the Venator on the right, that is a heavily damaged ship that is adrift, and I recently found a way to make it look damaged too.
