Helpful tips, advice, info docs

Post by Master Fionwë »

I had just finished a really long and detailed explanation of what I wanted to do, when my connection was lost. So I'm not going to be super detailed right now.
My idea is to create a series of docs that contain a summary of all the advice and such that people offer forward here, or or find, concerning any thing that has to do with modding. The docs will be such, mapmaking, side editting, xsi modeling, miscellaneous, and modding terms and phrases. I will take the side editing, but I need people who are willing to take on teh job of creating and compiling stuff in the other docs. I hope to get this out in a month, so please don't wait. Share any knowledge that you've learned about modding that wasn't in the modtools docs, ie. advice, tips. This thread is for teh purpose of recruiting help, and for posting any info you have that you want to share, though please, if you have info, put at the top of your post which doc it goes into. That'll make things easier for those who will put it together.
Any takers?

We have one.

And there was a wiki awhile ago, but I haven't heard anything about it lately. What did happen to it? :? But yeah, that's a good idea--so good, in fact, that it's already been thought of. :)

People kept messing up the Wiki (probably a disgrunted banned user) so we removed it.

Yes, I'm aware of that one. What I was talking about was a group of documents that would sorta be an extension of the docs that came with the modtools. I was thinking of compiling them into a file that people could download and keep with the original mod docs. Something that would be a quick and easy reference, though not as detailed as the 'Everything you need thread', as that would take up too much space. Though maybe instead of having people post stuff here, just read off the other thread and make a summary of it. I don't know, it was probably on impulse that I posted the thread in the first place, due to being up again really late. If this was completely pointless and I was just off my rocker with this idea, lock it. Somehow I was thinking that this would be different than the other thread.

I for one think that's a great idea, I always thought that the documentation didn't explain enough, and to have all the forum searches and FAQ's packaged into one pack of documentation would help with answering many "noob's" (like me, when it comes to mapping) questions.

I had planned on defining and providing examples for all the lua functions and ScriptCBs, but that was all lost when the wiki went down. Since then, I've designed programs for most of the common actions (adding/removing game modes and eras, adding load screens, etc...), but I've never had the time to finish them (I just need 3-5 lines to finish the FreeCam mod and only need watermark my tricks video...). I also have a few tools to search through all the scripts in order to find files which contain a given string or to list all lines containing a certain segment, but I've never added a GUI to those tools. I had planned on finishing the loading screen program this weekend, but something came up and I'm now going out of state. I don't have a clue when I'll have the time to finish it now. I've been asked to research hacking (discovered a real no-name hack which is not blockable by the server manager) inorder to prevent others from doing the same thing, and I'm still after custom movies. My web site could use a real address and pages with content would be nice too. The work I do at work is the same as the work I do for SWBF2. I work a little bit on all my projects and get nowhere on all of them. I guess I'm just not sure what to focus on. I can add a ton to the scripting documentation and provide some map making tips to prevent most ingame exploits.

Tip: Use a clipboard manager to store all your copies for a short time. That way, all you need to do to backup a section of text for a short while is to copy it.

(I'm up late too)

Thanks for the tip, it'll come in handy. And, yeah, that would be great if you would take the scripting doc. I hadn't thought of including one before, but since it's such a major issue with some people, hinthint, that would be great if you would do it.

Three a.m. late?
