Yes, 10 years ago today Super Smash Bros. Melee released for the Gamecube in both North America and Europe. I honestly couldn't believe it when I saw that this was true. Melee was a large part of my childhood and I thought it would be for the best if I started this thread, as it was no doubt a part of many of your upbringings as well. Feel free to discuss what made the game special for you in your messages.

I can still remember seeing the 24px24p pictures in Nintendo Power and thinking that it was the most graphically impressive game that could ever be released. The image of Sheik roundhouse kicking on Corneria and the 4 player match on Fountain of Dreams are images permanently embedded in my memory since seeing them in that article. I can still remember playing Hyrule Temple in Stamina mode for hours, unlocking characters I had never even heard of before ("What the heck is a Marth?") and leaving my Gamecube on overnight to unlock Mewtwo. The moment I finally felt ready to move on to different games was when I acquired enough skill to unlock the fight with and defeat Giga Bowser. It was just an amazing experience that I don't think any game since has been able to accomplish.

I should play some in honor of it's anniversary. Great game, great console. I love the Gamecube, was my first console. Built to last, those things are. You can drop the thing from 15 feet, hit it with a sledgehammer, and drop a bowling ball on it and it'll still work. Playstation 2 and the Xbox can't say that. :P

Melee was my start as a hardcore gamer. My brother and I didn't have a console until the Wii, and our only gaming system besides a computer was a GameBoy Advance. But my cousin, Brian, had a GameCube, and me and Brian went at it. It got intense and it got intense fast. We kept it all ingame, though, so it was amazingly fun. Don't get me wrong, I played a lot of games before SSBM, but that was the first game that I really focused in on and kept practicing over and over and over until I was the best.

I mained as Marth, mostly, and Brian was Roy. I darn near won our school's Super Smash Bros. tournament, but I got beat by an amazing Yoshi player (Brian lost in the semi finals to the same guy). Doesn't mean I didn't put up a hell of a fight, though.

Ohhhhh gosh, now all these memories are flooding in...

I'm the quirky player. I'll play any "non tourny" character and do it well. I can't really stand playing the boring flat game mode of tourny style. I played the crap out of this game alone, with my sister, and with my friends. Best feature was how fast it dropped items, so I'd play pokemon battles on pokemon stadium with friends. So much fun.

My favorite is the black hole glitch.
