Am I right in thinking the model used for that trooper is the Phase 2 AT-TE driver?

you should create a new plane, paint the parts with the brush and reduce the opacity, it looks more natural:
(use this skin with credit, you are allowed to change the color. credits: Labj for the rep-icon)

I think what you're thinking of is called layers in english

also a good technique (u used the 20. Modus of GIMPs Brushtool, correct?)
