How do I quickly edit a shipped asset?

I'm trying to remove the part on the top from this asset - http://i.imgur.com/M4WsZf4.png - the one with the red line around it.

What I did was export on the SWBF viewer the asset as .vml (can't remember exactly the format), used meshtool4 to get it to .obj (I think I was either lucky on this part or forgot something), import it on XSI 4.2., selected the part I wanted removed and deleted it, then exported as .msh using the pandemic plugin, placed the .msh on worlds, etc. - got into ZeroEditor, loaded the respective odf and the asset appeared without the part I removed - problem was tho that the asset I wanted appeared all white.

So how do I quickly delete what I don't want and ship back just what I want with everything else intact? Is there a quick way?

Will I have to re-texture everything back? If so how do I do that? From the tutorials in the FAQ all I see is how to animate weapons/characters/vehicles and animate them and texture them from scratch, but learning all that seems to be overkill for the (I think) simple thing I'm trying to do, also I don't know much about XSI besides using the viewports, opening the explorer and moving around in general.

Also, I was using the 4.2. XSI version with the pandemic tools but for some reason it's not opening up properly now (even with administrator's permission) and since I had my fair share of problems with it I decided to go with the ModTools 7.5 and installed the ZETool addon. I haven't tested it yet, but I should be able to export to .msh just like with the pandemic tools, right?

Maybe I'm going wrong about this altogether?

Yep, since you have Mod tool 7.5 with ZETools installed you can just use that to import>edit>export game assets.
