Empire at War problem

I recently go Empire at War from my uncle, (not as a gift, he had used it but he doesn't want it anymore) I installed the game without error. When I put in disk one to play the game froze at the title screen, closer inspection revealed that the disk was pretty scratched up. Is there any way I can still play?

There are kits for CD/DVD repair. It would be more rational to simply buy a new copy of the game though.
I recall reading something about using wax on the scratched DVD, but I don't know if it works.

In any case: Google it!!
