Can the Steam version of BFII be modded?

A friend of mine wanted to start learning to mod SWBFII but can't find a retail disk version. Will he be able to mod if he buys the steam version? I know steam has some addons they like to put in games for the sake or registry and piracy prevention so I don't know if these would get in the way. Also, is there any place that still sells the retail version? I would lend my friend my copy but as far as I know you can't play the game without the disk.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: It'll take some extra steps to find all the correct folder locations and tell the mod tools to look there, but it is possible.

I got mine from Amazon for $8. I really recommend getting it from Amazon. Amazon is awesome, and at the risk of sounding like a spokesperson for Amazon, I suggest you get your games from amazon. EAW, JK2, JK3, BF1, BF2, RC, they are can be bought cheap on Amazon.

Amazon is the wal-mart of the internet, basically. and If you can get a game from there instead of steam for the same price, I think it's better to get it off amazon. If you want to be able to run bf2 without a disc I know a lot of people here on GT have the 1.1 exe that doesnt need a disc to run. You will need a disc to run the Debugger though, I think.

there is also a version of the debugger avaible that doesnt need a disc.
i would also go for amazon, simply because i prefer to have a nice box with a disc and manual in my shelf.

If you download "Lode Vaduh's Version Switcher 2.0" from swbffiles, then replace your .exe with the International DVD 1.1 version, then run the game straight from BattlefrontII.exe (rather than the "Play Star Wars Battlefront II" shortcut), it skips the disc check and you can play BFII at any time with or without a disc. Even if you originally had the CD version, the .exe will still work. The actual program that Lode Vaduh made won't actually work with Vista or Win7, so you'll have to manually copy+paste the files.

Doesn't everyone here know that if you go *:\Program Files\Lucasarts\Star Wars Battlefront II\GameData, there's second .exe which just lets you play the game with or with out the disk? I assumed that everyone here knew that but maybe not?

I always launch SWBF2 with the BattlefrontII.exe located in:
C:\Program Files\LucasArts\Star Wars Battlefront II\GameData
and it most definitely checks for the disc each time; i use the DVD version.
Your situation must either be unique to your install or you're using a hacked exe.

It's not hacked, it's most certainly legit... ( I think ) weird, maybe yours is different?
Who else does it, and does not work with?

I recall a thread on this a few months ago. The .exe that came with the game from 2005 - 2007ish was 7mb and it had a CD check. The launcher that came with the game from 2008+ was 4 mb, had the 1.1 patch installed already, and it did not require the CD.

Aaahhh That's it! Yeah because mine has the v1.1 patch already installed. Thx fasty for clearing that up!
