Right click on the layer, then search for it.

I am sure i am missing something... TFU heavy trooper:

i went to layer>transparancy>remove alpha layer and the checkers just showed up as white...fml

go to:
layer>transparancy>the one under remove alpha layer, here a pop up opens and you only have to set the value at the right place...
