DirectX Won't Install (XP)

I am using a Acer ASPIRE ONE netbook w/ Windows XP Home Edition SP3 installed.
I did something stupid, I downloaded DirectX 10 for XP, and I thought "This will make the graphics on my computer look awesome" because originally, I had DirectX 9.0c.
So I installed it and I tried to play Republic Commando on it, and it said:
"you must have DirectX 9.0c to play this game" (not exact quote, but that's what it meant)
So I took action (maybe a bit to soon) and I tried to install 9.0c, it said that there was already a newer version installed (thus, DirectX 10). So, I COMPLETELY uninstalled DirectX, so now in the DirectX Diagnostic Tools, it says for DirectX version "Not Found", and now I can't install ANY version of DirectX (It says: "An internal system error has occurred. Please refer to DXError.log and DirectX.log in your Windows folder to determine the problem", in which, I have no idea where those files are)
I need help with this problem, any help at all will be gladly appreciated.
