tga option files entries clear up

guys i have some question about the tga option files properties.
most textures seems to work without option files but i need to know if i should create them for my coruscantmap.
From the assets stuff i found following entriesin different option files:

-8bit or -4bit (isn´t all 24bit tga or 24bit plus 8bit alpha channel?)
-compress (?)
-mipdistance 20 (20 of what feet?)
-bumpmap (needed entry for bumpmap tga)
-format r5g6b5 (or different . huuh?)
-bumpscale 3.0 or 5.0 or whatever (depth?)
-maps 1 (?)
