Matrix of Sounds

Ok. This may not look like much at first, but I've literally spent a couple hours playing around with this tiny little flash applet. I've seen similar things done before--pretend beat-boxes and synthesizers and what not--but I don't know what it is exactly about this one that stands out. There's something simplistically beautiful about it.

To someone who owns or has ever owned a synthesizer or other electronic music device, this may seem a bit familiar and a step down from what he or she is used to (since it only plays "bells"), but, for the rest of us, who only wish they had one, this is simply a delight.

To put it simply, you are given a grid, each box representing a different note at a different time, each of which you can turn on or off. It continuously plays the grid from left to right. Start turning on notes, and eventually you'll start hearing the notes being played. Every time a note is played, it will light up on the grid. Soon enough you may have a little tune going. The grid gives you a nice visualization of the music, so you can have fluttering melodies by drawing zig-zags, cacophony of sounds by filling in big bunches of blocks, a driving base-beat by filling in every-other bottom box, etc. This is something you'll really have to try yourself to get the full picture here. I've already recreated parts of Echoes by Pink Floyd and a couple Daft Punk songs here and there on it... Set aside some time and check it out:

Feel free to post similar finds to this that you like as well.

Is there any way to share the music you've created? Because that would be cool

Hehe, that's fun. I'll have to spend some time playing around with it later.

I just found the original one, which allows you to copy and paste so you can save (as text only) and share yours:

http://lab.andre-michelle.com/tonematrix

Example:

copy this:

128,544,68880,74818,65540,72,1040,75936,576,2176,71968,66064,1040,4640,65824,33280

right click the grid and paste

For any iPod Touch/iPhone users out there, there's also an app that is VERY similar to this called "Tonepad" (free) that you can also upload and download your friends' creations. Found that about a year ago and now Dann brings this up. Both are really cool.
