Internet not working right.

So we recently, *cough*, "upgraded" our internet connection with Verizon and apparently our old modem wouldn't be able to handle the new connection, so they sent a new one. After the faster plan was set up and the new modem ready, my connection would drop randomly on all computers and Xbox 360.
After numerous calls to Verizon were made, the most they could come up with was use the modem as a router, which it can do. It worked for a few hours, and today it's dropped 4 times in less than 3 hours. The lights on the modem stay on, but all of the machines in the network fail to connect on the DNS lookup process. I then have to shut the modem off, wait for it to go through it's long start up process, and then get back on for a limited time. I'm not good with this stuff so I have no idea what's going on.
I was going to try to set up the old modem and router, seeing as they worked with the new plan (
), but unfortunately, I can't, because my father is the one who knows the network password and can call Verizon's tech support and understand what they're talking about, and he's gone 'till Saturday.
So has anyone ever had this problem, or know how to fix it?
