Internet not working right.

So we recently, *cough*, "upgraded" our internet connection with Verizon and apparently our old modem wouldn't be able to handle the new connection, so they sent a new one. After the faster plan was set up and the new modem ready, my connection would drop randomly on all computers and Xbox 360.

After numerous calls to Verizon were made, the most they could come up with was use the modem as a router, which it can do. It worked for a few hours, and today it's dropped 4 times in less than 3 hours. The lights on the modem stay on, but all of the machines in the network fail to connect on the DNS lookup process. I then have to shut the modem off, wait for it to go through it's long start up process, and then get back on for a limited time. I'm not good with this stuff so I have no idea what's going on.

I was going to try to set up the old modem and router, seeing as they worked with the new plan ( ), but unfortunately, I can't, because my father is the one who knows the network password and can call Verizon's tech support and understand what they're talking about, and he's gone 'till Saturday.

So has anyone ever had this problem, or know how to fix it?

Is the new modem properly cooled? (As in, it's not next to a boiler or something right?) :P
(I sometimes experience the same issues, and onetime I felt the modem and I burnt my finger...)

It does get pretty hot, but not burn worthy. Right now I'm thinking it's either A) Temperature B) Firewall (which it isn't, I've checked) C) Faulty box D) Verizon screwed something up

It's D. Always D...

Seriously though, it could be anything.

Get a tech out to check the lines. 99% of the time that's the problem. Every DSL problem I've ever seen has to do with something being wrong with the lines. He should test your new modem too, as it'll still be under warranty. If the modem is bad they can replace it, but it's usually old/faulty wiring between a main and your house.

it could be the cables... (this would be the worst possible chance)
we are permanently having disconnections since we "upgraded" our internet to 2000 because there is only DSL 2000 possible in our street (we had 1000 before) and the problem is that the cable our street uses is simply overstrained...
at night on weekends when everybody starts downloading whatever, our internet can disconnect every minute and you cant do anything against it because the provider wont lay a better cable just because some people complain about low speeds/disconnection

i dont know if this can apply to your location but your issue sound very similiar to our

Holy cow. Do you have a dynamic IP, Fusion? I was trying to find out more info about your area, but it looks like you never have more than 20 posts on a given IP. It looks like you guys use Verizon, though.

I have a very, very dynamic IP :P

We're having a technician come in to check things out this week, It's most likely the modem because we checked the wires in the phone...box...thingy today and they look fine, no corrosion at all, so that's good.
