I made it for the sheer fact that everyone's all like "Ooooooooo, Half-Life 2 is teh RoXorZ!" So I play through it and spend most of my time frustrated, and then the ending sucked.
No thanks to future HL games.

PM'd everyone?

jk
I've never played any of the Half Life games but by the reviews they don't sound like the best games.

At the end of the day you just gotta know what you like and stick with it. I really
liked "High School Musical," unlike the entire internet*, so I try and not get too cheesed whenever I hear the inevitable disparaging comments made in ignorance or blind conformity.

Oh, so we need proof? I could bring in thousands of people* that could give you practically endless lists of valid proof that Half-Life 2 is
one of the best games out there.
Short list:
Hmm... maybe that wasn't proof. Well, I'll think of something...
Let's just say that the ending of Half-Life 2 was the worst out of the series.

i agree with Fingerfood (i dont really like the music though, but i dont hate it either)
as for the ending, i liked it, it was actually something different as all that "you saved the world" and "you are our hero" stuff
and its a shooter, not an RPG and not a star wars game, the ending was much better as in some similar shooters, some of them dont have a proper ending at all (and it was the typical HL ending, only blue shift had a different ending)
and dont forget, HL2 story doesnt end where HL2 ends, btw Episode 2 ending wasnt bad either (at least for me)
so guys, you demand too much

Fingerfood wrote:Graphics. For that time, those were the darn best graphics around.
Irrelevant to me. As I've said many times before, some of my favorite games don't have great graphics.
Fingerfood wrote:Gameplay. Evenly balanced with several of those, "Wow!" moments.
I could seriously argue both of those points. The only "Wow" moments for me were physics related.
Fingerfood wrote:Music. The music is insanely good. I could listen to it for hours without getting bored.
Can't really say as there's only a few games that I actually keep the music turned on - Halo (series) and Star Wars (all) being the big ones.
Fingerfood wrote:Story. Great story that isn't one of those, "Kill them all!" type of stories.
I'd call it an
okay story.
Flame me if you want, I was just utterly and completely disappointed by the game. Every aspect of it "didn't do it for me". It was fun, but like Area 51 this'll go into a closet and won't be dug out for 5-6 years. Honestly, the first game was much, much more engrossing to me. I realize that the game
is fun and inviting, but I don't know that it'll ever be in my top 20, let alone top 10. I played it, enjoyed what I could, beat it, and I'm moving on.

I actually don't like the Half-Life style shooter, either stick to puzzle or stick to shooter. Love the story and Portal, however.
And Mav, I wouldn't say everyone who attacks HSM is ignorant or blindly following everyone else.
We had a lovely class vote one time in which that movie was chosen to watch, and ultimately, I could not tell the difference between it, and any other stereotypical "True love conquers all, because of convenient plot devices and incompetent villains/feel good" movie of the year.
The fact that Disney is profiting off of the preteen girls completely ignoring the message, only liking it because "Zac Efron is like, so totally, like like like like cute/hot!" makes me sick. That, and the fact that they would be willing to do it 4 times.
(Gah, I think I rewrote this message like 5 times, I just sounded too pushy in the earlier drafts

)

At LEAST play Episodes 1 and 2. You may not like the majority of Episode 1, but the ending...is...suprising.
Episode 2, however, is incredible. The engine update, although my graphics couldn't really support it, looked great, and the maps and battles are awesome. You may not like the 'ambush' style of Episode 2, but in my opinion Episode 2 is better than Half-Life 2, and Half-Life 2 is better than Episode 1.
It also makes a difference with playing it on the X-Box (which you are, aren't you?) Typically first-person shooters are better with mouse and keyboard, and Half-Life 2 is no exception. I have no idea how you'd do Ravenholm with a control stick.
It also may be Halo. I've barely played Halo, but I didn't like it. Maybe if you like Halo you don't like Half-Life 2?

I've played enough shooters to realize the difference on how they act on a console vs PC.

I remember buying Quake brand new. Could be the difference in styles though. I love the Halo-esque gameplay, and typically dislike the HL2-style of gameplay (lots of walking on skinny beams, crazy ambushes, etc). Even though they're both shooters I guess it really is an apples vs oranges type of situation. Probably why I didn't really like Area 51, too.

Didn't say that.
Maveritchell wrote:I try and not get too cheesed whenever I hear the inevitable disparaging comments made in ignorance or blind conformity.
I know that some people have legitimate preferences for other things, just as some people like Half-Life, or dislike mustard, or like skydiving. My point was that when the inevitable ignorant (or blinded by conformity) comments
do come, that they can be ignored. It wasn't really about High School Musical, that was just an easy example (because so many people do reject it without grounds; it's like the "cooties" for the 12-18 year old male crowd).
There are fanboys for everything and as it relates to this topic: There are a lot of people here who like Half-Life (1/2/whatever), and some of them are just being fanboys. I can't take those opinions seriously (I've played Half-Life 2 and I also acknowledge what I feel are faults) and I was making the point to Tean that he shouldn't either.
This doesn't mean anyone should disregard those who like Half-Life 2, and on the inverse, I'm sure there are people who don't like Half-Life 2 simply because other people
like it. They are also fanboys. There's a point at which someone should be able to like a game for their own reasons without having someone's opinions forced on them, because it is
just a video game.

Just to reply to
Fingerfoods comment on how he played a bit of
HALO and didn't like it: Play more. I disliked
HALO at first, but then I sank into it and it rocks.
Teancum has an actualy reason to dislike whichever
Half Life he played, because he actually beat the game, and has an opinion based on that. I hate it when people who haven't played games say they rock. Like my friend, who says
Gears of War 2 is amazing. And he hasn't played it.
