How to use my Custom Side files with shipped maps

Hi all, first post here.
So i've been following some tutorials for modding and have been able to successfully make changes to the units/sides/teams on my plain, boring, flat custom map generated by VisualMunge. I used the files "jedi side example.zip" to create a custom side and replace the Republic Engineer infantry with Luke Skywalker. Great, I have now edited the stock CW-era Republic team so that I can now select Luke from the unit selection screen as though he's just any other normal unit. However, this change obviously only applies to the custom map I generated. I'm not really interested in actually making a custom map though; what I'd really like to do is to just edit the units in the shipped maps (use downloaded assets to add in some custom weapons, edit the selectable classes, change the unit models, etc.).
So TL;DR, my question is this: I've replaced the Republic Engineer with Luke Skywalker on my custom map. How would I do the same thing with the shipped maps?
Thanks in advance.
