I'm glad you posted those, because it underscores an issue I have with just about 90% of the skins I see in this topic (and it's not just you, but this is a good example): "dirt."

You have actual reference pictures of this guy in the middle of a battle on a dirty, sandy planet. By all accounts, what you see there should be the "dirtiest" their uniforms get, if at all. I can understand adding a bit of weathering to the stripes (even the stock textures do that) or the uniform, but adding all those blaster scorches or dirt or whatever to these textures makes them look tremendously sloppy at any distance further away than "really close."

I usually just don't bother commenting on it, since this is obviously a trend and a number of people like it, but to be honest, it looks pretty bad, and this is why you don't see this kind of "hyper-detailing" in professionally-done textures. Less is more, people. You can have a sharp-looking (and I don't mean SHARPEN ) retexture without scratches and dirt completely obscuring the base texture and design.

I don't mean to knock the tastes of some of you guys, but it seems like so many of you have an algorithm for whether you like a skin:
1) Is it a clone trooper skin - check
2) Does it have upwards of 50% of the reskin covered in some kind of soot, grime, scratch, or burn - check
3) Does it have at least one addon mesh attached to it - check

...etc.

When you look at even the "dirtiest" clones in Episode III (which is the only movie that even shows any real wear on the armor), none of them start to lose the proverbial forest in the trees, like so many do here.

Agreed with Mav, and to give my personal opinion, I like and prefer CLEAN skins way better. The somewhat new and shiny looks fits the Clones way better in my opinion.

Still, I can't ignore that those skins have costed a lot of energy and time, for that:

Well, there needs to be a medium for skins. You can't have skins that are so dirty you can't make out the pattern behind it, but you can't make it so clean that it looks like they've never even been in a battle. The stock skins fit this medium pretty well IMO, with some tweaking of the vibrancy of the colors.

It's true, they've never really shown anything that pristine in any of the movies. Oh, wait. Shucks.

(Yes, I know that these are stormtroopers, but the point is there that in the movies any dirt or scratching was minimal.)

The whole point of stormtroopers was to create the image of a sterile, precise, soulless army, which is why they always have shiny, clean armor. The dirtiness evokes feelings of sympathy by implication of struggle (which is incidentally why I'm sure the newer movies do occasionally add dirt to the clone uniforms - that and maybe a bit of a CGI fetish) - but in any case, even when it shows up: ...it's always tiny by comparison. See those scratches/burn marks in the second picture? If those were on a skin they would be just a few pixels, but the problem is that we see those and think "must add that detail" and because of the fact that it becomes a bigger issue in our mind, it becomes a bigger feature on the texture than it needs to be.

amen. clones are overrated, dirt/damage is overrated and doesnt even have a remote correlation to the philosophy behind stormtroopers which Maveritchell has so kindly pointed out.
