Help me pick out a new laptop.

Instead of buying a new HDD for my crappy laptop I have decided to get a new one. My budget is under $400. I plan to use it mostly for web browsing, word processing, general school work (power points, video presentations, etc). I do not plan to play a lot of games, mainly just Civilization 3: Complete, but I also plan to purchase Star Wars: Battlefront II and use the mod tools. From what I read the recommended ghz for SWBFII is 2.4, this is only 2.1 but it is a dual core. The RAM is good, I am not sure about the graphics card, the main thing that worries me is Vista.
This is one that caught my eye:

No, not "nuff said", in fact, you barely said anything, you didn't explain why you think he should choose a Dell, and you didn't say why a Dell would be better than what he wants.
Also, shouldn't this go in the Tech forum?
Personally, I prefer Sony laptops myself, I have a old Sony from 99, I threw a few upgrades in it, put XP on it, and it runs like no other laptop I've seen. I'm not sure about Sony's recent stuff, but I sure love that little laptop.

I managed to get an extra $100 to spend on a laptop.
I have narrowed my selection down to 2 laptops. Which one would you prefer?

honestly, i think the toshiba is a much better choice. better graphics, (trust me, my laptop is a dell with intel integrated graphics... :/), more ram (faster) and more hard drive. for about the same price. Oh and my biggest word of advice. Wait a few months for windows 7. (supposed to be much better than vista)

Yeah, if you get a laptop from Best Buy, Future Shop, or Dell, they give you a free upgrade to Windows 7.

idk about that. my friend got a asus last spring and his laptop has the best cooling system of any computer. matter of fact, asus is known for their cooling systems, iv seen many laptops from many compannies that use asus fans in them. just my two cents. but dont bust the bank for an asus if its for school work, get toshiba, sony, or dell. all good choices and will hold up.

Actually, this would seem to indicate it's based on manufacturer and not store:

If you buy a PC starting Friday, June 26th, it should be covered under a free upgrade plan. (I say "should" because it depends on the manufacturer, but most of them are jumping on this with both feet.)
That said, while Best Buy might be well known and reliable, you'll undoubtedly get laptops cheaper at a place such as
http://www.newegg.com.

Yeah, well I'm sure you can get the deal from other places, but my point was just that those were the places/companies I knew of which had it.
