Yeah, I've been modding games for 10+ years, and am a programmer by trade. Let me just say that this is why the professionals make games and we play them. But I'll break it down for you.

Phase 1: Concept Design (4-9 months)
-Planning
-Early Implementation
-Testing
-Scrapping what you did and starting over
-Implementing that
-Testing
-Repeat a few more times

Phase 2: Production Design (6-15 months)
-Modeling every single asset from scratch
-Texturing every single asset from scratch
-Animating every single asset from scratch
-Designing every single level from scratch
-Coding engine changes

Phase 3: Testing (4-18 months)
-Testing
-Getting feedback, fixing bugs
-Testing
-Getting feedback, fixing bugs
-Testing
-Getting feedback, fixing bugs
-Testing
-Getting feedback, fixing bugs
-Testing
-Getting feedback, fixing bugs
-Testing
-Getting feedback, fixing bugs
-Testing
-Getting feedback, fixing bugs
-Testing

-You get the idea...

Let me put it this way. I've been working on the Conversion Pack for two years as project lead. I probably have another six months before I'd consider it done, and that's using lots of pre-made assets and borrowing lots of help from the community.

It's a pipe dream to try and make a true game with folks online unless you all have lots of discipline and lots of skill. I hate to burst your bubble, but better to burst it now than later.

I understand. Which is why, Im looking at another idea... *Sly grin*

This isn't really what you could consider a fps, or multiplayer, but I started a Star Wars Side scroller several years ago. Infact, I got really cool Grev anims, and other ideas. So Im gonna get back to that!

I can see it now:

[GT]
Eisley Battlegrounds

Well, Im off to find the file, the file, the file, the file!

Not to be rude, but this i don't call an idea, but fantasy.. Game creator is a job which is totally underestimated, and i think we should really be thankfull for the modtools they give us... You could totally change a game, that's true... Making new backgrounds, music, shell and as much new models and whatevers you can make.. Whatever you'll make, I'll skip this and run ZeroEditor once more, thanking the gamecreators once more :)

Oh, I understand! Even though everyone complains about the shoddy-ness of SWBF2, we got to be happy they made it. And Im by no means quitting modding. Im just gonna change my plans and finish my side scroller, maybe making the main character guru, or who knows. Im still thinking it through. But here is what I have made.

Grevious has an amazing attack in which he does a flip and spins his sabers and slams the ground. The basic trooper is made, and I made the SBD. I just have to give them bullets.

Just don't plan on making monetary gain off of it.

You'll run into a legal pit of despair...

I know that. I cant gain money from anyone elses ideas, ie. Star Wars. Its gonna be free. Who ever heard of a paying sidescroller...

Whatever, just know that not many people are interested in this, and if you do end up actually making it, it's..... probably gonna be solo, the kind of project a side-scrolling game is.

As great as the idea is, I've seen it all before. People get enthusiastic for two months, then realise the enormity of the project ahead of them, and then go and hide in the murky bowels of the Internet, waiting for the project to be forgotten about. I'd love to see this come to fruition, but it's not a paid, fulltime job and it just ain't going to happen without a leader who is completely and utterly dedicated to bugging people to get stuff done. I'm supposed to be working on a Zelda Animated Project but the leader hasn't contacted me for 4 months with stuff to do, despite his initial enthusiasm.

Trust me, you'll have a much better chance if you do the initial designs, some early concepts and models and stuff, and THEN present your idea and ask for help.

A simple way to start with a long line of games.

Pocket Tanks-Easily modded, but you will need a compiler. My friend and I started "Dalek Tanks." We never got our hands on any good compiling and decompiling software, so it never took off. If someone would direct me at a compiling software that would work that'd be sweet. I'm in for :cpu:.
