I can't seem to hex edit object textures correctly.

This issue is completely my fault, but i'm just not sure what i'm doing wrong.
I tried following the instructions that were in this thread to try out changing the textures of objects. I understood what I was basically supposed to do, but seeing how that thread is about Unit Hex Editing rather than Object Hex Editing that seemed to mess me up later on.
So, what I tried to do was make the main texture for the "uta1_bldg_pillars_hangar" prop to Pol1_bldg_cavern_1.tga". So I opened the uta1_bldg_pillars_hangar.msh file in the hex editor and replaced the old .tga file with the Poliss Massa one (with a new name that has the same amount of characters as the old tga file as instructed.)
When I open ZeroEditor the object's texture is changed like I wanted it to be, like this:
Hidden/Spoiler:
But once I munge and go in-game, the object isn't on the map.
That's where i'm lost. It's probably a simple solution but this is all still new to me and I haven't done this enough to realize where I messed up.
I'm guessing it's related to the ODF file. According to the thread, i'm supposed to change the Geometry name and such with the new file name. That's just it though, all I want to do is change the texture, what file name? I'm using the regular uta1_bldg_pillars_hangar msh file with the new tga name inside of it. I obviously don't understand it, is that something related mainly to side related hex editing or is it universal and i'm just misunderstanding what i'm supposed to do?
I'm sorry if I wasn't descriptive enough. It's utterly confusing for me. But that's all a part of being new at something I guess...

Theres one thing i dont understand: Why you dont just import it into xsi modtool and change the material there ? Less work and i promise it will work

Sorry noMatt, but you're wrong. Hex editing materials is easy and fast.
I just copied the rep_inf_trooper msh, renamed it to rep_inf_officer. Then I opened the new rep_inf_officer msh in the hex editor and renamed the texture it called for to rep_inf_officer.
It took less than 40 seconds to do. I really doubt it's easier to import it into XSI. If it can't be done faster than 40 seconds, it's not easier.

hmm you have to download a hex editor and learn to use it.
And like you see in this Forum there are some fails on that

Uh, that doesn't take much to do. It's just that i'm confused as to what I did that made my object with the changed texture not appear in-game.

The hex editor is free and small to download. It's very simple to use. There are complicated things to do with it, like hex editing model chunks, but hex editing texture names is literally as easy as finding the text and typing over it.

I don't know what's causing your problem, NovaSpartanX, could you give us the debug log?

Here's a dumb question: How do I do that?

The only dumb questions are the ones we're too afraid to ask.

Ah ha, there we go. Show us your uta1_bldg_pillars_hanger ODF.
Re: I can't seem to hex edit object textures correctly.
I've tried multiple possibilities for the bottom Geometry name but to no avail.

It's been years since I last saw that error, so I forget what it means exactly. That being said, I believe it's failing to find the model in the ODF. In the error log, it seems to be looking for a model named Pol1_bldg_cavern1_1.tga Which doesn't make sense, but whatever. Let's start at the beginning.
You said the original texture name was uta1_bldg_pillars_hanger. That's 24 characters long.
You said you renamed it to Pol1_bldg_cavern_1? That's 18 characters long.
So there's your first problem. Go back to the stock assets, copy the stock model back to your world and start again. This time make sure the length is the same. NEVER delete characters or use backspace.
If need be, I'll do it for you so you can see how it should look. I'd prefer you to learn on your own though, but I'm willing to meet you halfway if needed.

That's not it though.
The reason it was 18 character was that the tga file I was replacing it with was 18 characters, "uta1_bldg_level10_c.tga" (I probably should have mentioned that.)
That's what I replaced with the Poliss Massa texture. "uta1_bldg_pillars_hanger" is the msh file.
Edit: Odd, I redid it anyway and this time it worked. I must have miscounted the characters the first time? Thanks
I need to try it out with a few more objects to be sure...

Had to be you. Someone else might have gotten it wrong.

Heh, you *can*, but you have to adjust the headers and just LOL NO to that.
