Switching playable factions

Has anyone ever done this? I've never modded any Battlefront games before so I have no clue where to start.
Anyway, would it possible to just copy an original map, but then change one of the faction into something else? For example, replacing the Rebels or Imperials with a clone wars faction, Tusken raiders, Naboo Royal Guards etc, etc.
