Modding times almost done? what do you mean, the release of SWBF2 does not mean an end to modding for SWBF1 or for SWBF2, BF2 is a couple of months away yet.
As for your question, the downloads and ratings next to the mod maps are also a good indication of popularity. Although I've always found that my favourite map is "the next one"
finally this topic maybe in the wrong forum it should maybe be in the Star War Battlefront General forum.

got to admit that mod maps don't really last in my addon folder very long, I much prefer the challenge of online play (if modded maps where available on line this would be different) however the maps that do tend to last longest in my addon folder are those of Rends, try out the Hoth: Escape space map, Coruscant and bounty hunters. THis isn't to say that others don't make great maps too because they do, however as people learn more and there ideas and ability improve, each map tends to be better than their last, hence my favourite is always the next one, if that makes sense.
All the modded maps inspire me as it shows what is possible, this (in the long run) is probably not very helpful as I know that I won't be able to achieve what Rends, Majin and many others have released without putting in a huge amount of time and effort and I personally wouldn't feel comfortable releasing something that I knew wasn't up to standard or as good as it could be, as well as this it needs to be original. This is why release dates for maps aren't set in stone and why you need to be patient for them when one is announced. I also endevour to fit my map in with the films as much as humanly possible. I was working on Dagobah until Pandemic released screen shots of SWBF2 Dagobah, no point in releasing mine as it'll never come close to theirs. You really should try your hand at making a map you know.
Anyway coming rapidly back on topic, favourite maps.. SWBF multiplayer, failing that, Rends's.

You can rest at the bar to restore health and get ammo from the pool droid, muhaha

Ord Mantell is definitely one of the best (anyone seen Rippentuck lately?)
Abridon and Endor: Confrontation used to be a couple of my favourites, but haven't played either of them in a while
Defining the best is a bit tricky- there are some exceptionally well designed maps e.g. Coruscant, some where the main attraction is new stuff added to the game e.g. Majin's work, and some that are simple mass-destructive fun e.g. Rogue Clones
Of course my current favourites may be irrelevant given that in development we have Invisible Hand (along with about half a dozen others Bandu's promised over the past 6 months

), Coruscant: Streets, L-5-R's Mon Calimari map, the ARC project seems to be getting back on track and there always seems to be someone new willing to take a crack at it

yep the custom maps section of SWBF downloads. If you've missed ord mantell then you've probably missed loads of others, download all the map packs 1-5 and any others will be in the custom map download section.
And to quote Grievous:
