Not quite, that tells you how to do random skies, not how to change the sky during a battle.
My best guess would be to make a skydome with an animated .tga, similar to tank treads, and have a texture that scrolled across, slowly turning day into night.

i think that would look ugly
imagine clouds which get more and more squashed when they rise..

What he said.
But the transition would need to be really slow to make it happen.

Well, simply an animated texture - many frames for the same animated image? Might eat up too much memory, but hey...

Hah, an animated skydome? That's preposterous (not to make fun, but it really is laughable if you consider the reasons):
1) Animated textures are really just
one texture, divided into a (power of two) number of keyframes (i.e. one texture split into 16 even pieces).
2) Skydome textures need, particularly, to be high-res, because they're stretched over an entire sky.
I think the problem is apparent.

Well, if you can change the ambient lighting ingame, then you can get a work-around. If not, then you're stuck with random skies.
You could have a thick cloud cover, then animate it to move and reveal the skydome. I don't know, I'm just guessing from what I see happen in CoD4's "Ultimatum" map.
