Same!
Is that doable with GIMP?

.... Quite doable, wha ti do, i use the... "stamp thing" wiht a bit of Opacity, it works Quite well, not perfect i add, but Quite, also try Selecting what you want changed, then change the colour with the "tools>colour tools" at the top, it works best

and thnx "-_-"

Yes, I think Taivyx uses MAX though.
There are alot of up and coming modelers, Darth_Z13, Taivyx, Maveritchell, and myself and somemore I can't think of.
Then there's other more expericed ones like pyc0fred, Qdin, Murdcor (sp?), and Minilogguy.

This is a very good base for other skins as well.

Okay, credit goes to Challenger for telling me how to.

How to change colors of a skin without destroying what's underneath it in GIMP:
[10:59] <DoM>[GT-b] Taivyx: Caleb1117 and hebes want to know how to change something's color without destroying what's underneath (in other words, what you did), so how do you do it in GIMP, seeing as I use photoshop?
[11:00] <DoM>ESC[GT-B]Сңάווєпٯєг: The age old question.
[11:00] <DoM>ESC[GT-B]Сңάווєпٯєг: In GiMP, you choose the brush icon
[11:00] <DoM>ESC[GT-B]Сңάווєпٯєг: and then click the drop down menu that says normal
[11:00] <DoM>ESC[GT-B]Сңάווєпٯєг: change it to multiply
[11:01] <DoM>ESC[GT-B]Сңάווєпٯєг: and drag the transparency bar to the left as necessary
[11:01] <DoM>ESC[GT-B]Сңάווєпٯєг: then paint away!

Or you could just select what you need to re-color, then use the HSL (hue-saturation-lightness) You can change it to any color with just the slide of a bar. By far the easiest and simplest way to recolor.

If I need to do creative work (like patterns and designs) with coloring in photoshop, I convert the drawing to black and white and make a new layer and overlay the color on it. In GIMP you can do what challenger said. Personally I think the color setting is better than multiply, but it depends on what you're doing.

Changing color, without destroying the detail under is actually kind of hard.
Multiply will work sometimes, but not always. The reason is (as I'm sure you've noticed) multiply darkens things considerably; if you wanted a darker color, it would turn out pretty black.
I've been experimenting, and I found that if you draw the color you want onto the skin on a new layer, then duplicate that layer and change the bottom one to 'dodge' with about a 68% opacity and the top to burn with about a 95% opacity, it comes out pretty nicely. If it's too dark or too light in spots, you can then go in with the dodge/burn tool and dodge/burn away on the layer called 'dodge.' Only problem is that it's kind of neon-ish, which is good in some places, but not in others.

If you're changing the color to black it's a whole other story. In that case, you're probably better off just coloring in the lines and then replicating the little details you paint over. Try using the edge detect on the little detail section, then moving it up, changing to 'soft light' and inverting the colors.

Really, there's not a clear way to do it, as far as I know, so just mess around until you're happy.

I also recommend experimenting with the different settings besides Normal and Multiply. Darken Only is helping a ton with my podracer  , which is almost done. Here are 3 new skins I made recently:

A Chiss (Not Done):

A 41st Elite Legion Clone Trooper:

A 7th Sky Corps Clone Trooper (Not Done):

My skins are getting better IMO, thanks to a little GIMP secret I discovered  .

New Question:

In GIMP, if I have the Opacity at less than 100, and I go over the same section twice, it makes that area darker. is there any way to prevent this?

erm... Don't?
If you have the opacity at less than 100, and you go over it more, it will look closer to 100... I don't know, what are you trying to do?
