For a person, I try to model with two primitives being the limit. I try to use no more than one cube and then at the end (not sure if this function is in XSI) give it a smooth proxy if necessary.

@Darth-Revan: Your stuff is really well done, no matter if its one object or several. One object is more for polycount optimization (and bragging rights), but for moving parts and/or some models multiple objects are better from a design/development point of view. It still looks great, but you can reduce the amount of polygons on cylinder endcaps though to make them more efficient. I hope you find someone good at UVing and Texturin or become proficient at it yourself. Those models deserve a great texture.
@ YouJediJunkie: I think you're one of the best "from scratch" texture makers around, but I gotta do this one myself (well at least for the first skin) because I need the practice and unless you wanna do all my Halo stuff, because I also want a consistent texture quality/style for this. However, I'll send 2 UV stamped tgas your way later on to see what you can cook up (most likely once I get off my butt and UV the armor, the Elite itself is UVed). I do consider it flattering to have you offer.
Oddly enough, I find it easier and faster to layout UVs for a Organic character model rather than a Weapon/Mechanical. It took me 3-4 hrs over 3-4 days of work to do the layout for a 600 odd Poly SMG, but only 2-3 hrs over 1-2 days for a 2000+ poly elite. I bet the Armor will take 2-3 days.
EDIT: Texturing has begun, its a face only a mother could love.

Nice work on your character, but since this is a
Showcase topic and not a
progress discussion topic I split your progress posts into a new WIP topic, you may continue progress discussion here:

Seconded! I like the style of that a lot and the texture

. Also, if you want me to give it some coke/sprite textures as well just ask! (Though I won't get my hopes up xD.
Anyway here's a model which YJJ is texturing at this very minute!

Cool! Looks a bit like a half-life 2 person who got possessed by the 'turkeys'! Just give it a gory texture and I'll love you!
