Announcement: A new discovery on scorch marks

I just experimented with some things, and I found a way to get those scorch marks seen in a screen of SWBF: Renegade Squadron.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look right when shooting a wall. It still looks as if it hit the floor when it hits the wall. In simpler terms, it still needs work.
I did this to disprove someone's comment that it wouldn't work.

also you can use the color tool in ze to make marks on terrain.

Yes, but I'm making a weapon effect that makes a scorch mark.

I found it! I got it working. I just have to edit the lifespan, since they stay there and float once a person dies.

I guess so. It depends on if people are actually interested in this. If only a few people want it, I'll just PM it to them.

are you trying to make this or something like it maxloef? if not then don't say stuff like that. phazon is still doing quite a bit of work. don't complain like that. I'm sure it still works.
good job phazon.

:royal: good work, I could use that once I finally get my modding problems fixed.

ooooooh. my apologies maximumloaf. nevermind.

Well, it's something similar to the Mace Windu groundcrack, but I tweaked it so it's at least somewhat decent. I had to change the geometry from BillBoard to Animated, or something else that did the same. About three other configurations did that.
I guess this has been tried already? If so, then this might be useless.
@ maxloef - Are you mad? I didn't mean to make anyone angry, I just thought it would be cool to make a new effect.
Sigh, it seems I can't do anything right with modding anymore. What I do has usually been tried years ago.

Ok, I'm a bit confused. Are you basing these scorch marks off of the ImpactEffect line in the weapon_ord? And Is Phazon working with Particle editor to downsize Mace Windu's groundcrack.fx for a scorch mark. And would it be necessary to do that double layer thing if your'e trying to make accurate scorch marks that hit terrain?
-[EDIT]-
Dude, go to the assets/YAV/effects folder and there is a scorch mark TGA file there along with a decal_explosion_scorch FX file for it

Sorry for my lack of information, I havent noticed it...
Yes, I took mace's groundcrack, tweaked it dramatically, and made the crack size a lot smaller. I made it an ImpactEffect, which I had to do for all of those categories (like the ImpactEffectSoft, etc.), and made a scorchmark. I never said I had a decal. Maxloef said that...

That's great phazon! Any chance of a screenshot?

I'll definitely be interested in this if/when you release it.

Why is everyone freaking out all of a sudden? Phazon clearly said it doesn't work right.
And about the thing not working; seeing as how you're using Mace Windu's ground crack thing, it's going to show up on the ground, since that's just how the effect was made. If you'll notice, doing Mace's ground crack on say, a slanted surface, the crack effect will still be completely straight and horizontal, floating in the air, as if there was some invisible surface there. I'm not so sure you can edit it so as it'd adjust to the terrain/objects and such when you do it. I've never really looked into it, so I can't tell you right off the top of my head if it'd be as simple as a little ODF editing, or if it's actually hard-coded into the game that way.
Either way, it's not exactly the most efficient way of doing it. Sure it works, but only when the player shoots at the ground or surface they're standing on. Like Fred already said, the best way to do it is with a decal. You just gotta figure out how to get it to work. Personally, I think it's a bit too much work for something so insignificant, but eh.

I also mentioned that I fixed the bug I had in my first post. I changed the geometry (in Particle Editor) to a different one, so that it's actually halfway decent. It works great on walls, and it works pretty good on the ground, too.
The screenshot will come soon.
EDIT: @brokenshard - The reason you haven't seen any scorch mark attemtps in the past is because you haven't been around here much longer than I have. In fact, you haven't been around until recently...and I see that you joined only four days after I did...
EDIT 2: Here they are!
Sorry for their size, I forgot to resize these suckers.
This effect I made has a small explosion with it, mind you.
And that's the remaining bug, althought I found a new theory.
I'll have to make two effects. One for the ImpactEffectTerrain (for the ground) which will be flat like Windu's groundcrack, and the one I currently have for the rest.

Ah, I hadn't seen the post where you said you had fixed the problem. My bad.
As for the effect, it actually looks pretty decent. The only problem, of course, is the clipping issue with the ground like in that second screen. Besides that though, looks like you're on the right track.
Another thing you might want to do, which I think would make the scorch marks much better, is attach a small smoke effect. Nothing big, but a little bit of smoke or something after impact would definitely look cool. I'll have to look into seeing if I can mess around with it myself and see if I can kind of replicate it, maybe mess around with it and make my own effect. It'd be cool to implement in my maps, however small it may be.

Actually, I do have a smoke effect, as seen very slightly on the second mark in the first screen. Maybe I can make it last longer...
