I Need Modeling advice for Battle of Yavin

I think this is quite simple, but better safe than sorry.

I'm planning to make a Battle of Yavin map, not satisfied with the one released in filefront for several reasons, the most important, the Death Star is not a sphere to begin with, and some other minor details.

So, there is nothing complicated in making a spheric Death Star as the base of all, I'll only need to make sure the shipped hangar assets and stuff fit on a few hangar holes.

Of course the space station is huge, so it wouldn't be wise to model the surface as accurate as possible, and most important, the fighters move along a small part of it, so the actual prop wouldn't need much detail at least in the rear half of the model.

But I have one big question since watching the films doesn't answer exactly, is the trench what goes ALL AROUND the middle dividing both top and bottom halves? so that means any fighter going through if as in the films doesn't go on a straight line but rather in a curve line?

And now for Yavin moon, if I am correct, the base in the filefront map is hidden behind a second sky dome, correct? so I can add a custom prop for a sky dome and possibly some stuff to make "floor" in it (maybe something to cover the obvious "floating" props effect), right?

And then I can make a "moon" prop to complement this and make it appear as if the fighters come from it, right? as for the collision and stuff I suppose that will be more of a Modding Forum question anlong with other things.

Thanks in advance.

I think the trench from the "Trench Run" has been referred to as the "equatorial trench" in some sources, so in that case yes, it would be what goes all around. And any trench on the surface of a sphere is going to go in a "curve line," but it will be a non-noticeable curve (just like the "curve lines" you walk or drive every day) due to the size of the Death Star.

And I will tell you right away that you won't get a model that size into SWBFII with any detail at all (or more likely regardless of detail) and have the game work. There's no really good way to make a Death Star surface work well with high flying vehicles, aside from maybe some seriously well-done skydome work. Your design is not going to work. There, I said it.

Hmm... skydome, would you enlighten me about skydomes in that case? another option I had was only modeling the "relevant" part of the Death Star and put some kind of stuff in the backrgound to simulate the rest (not even a complete sphere either just enough space within the boundary).

There's no way that the equator is the trench since if you watch the movie when the falcon is being pulled in and even in RotJ that trench is HUGE. It must be somewhere else, in the rogue leader game and movie the trench is very narrow, notice how vaders 3 fighter formation barely fit...

There is always the possibility that no trench is a uniform size, but you are correct, however. I just looked at the Star Wars novelization and it calls it "a deep artificial canyon, one of the many streaking the northern pole of the Death Star."

In the movie, the actual trench appears to be a smaller trench inside the main trench, which makes sense of the small size.

Yay... although this goes for some "research" and "discussion" (I have made the earlier with little results), but yep, at least I wanna try to make that thing as accurate (gameplay wise) as the engine can let me, about the skydome, I really wonder how can I make the other 3/4 of the Death Star to blend with a mesh... XD
