Insanely Huge File Size

Post by EraOfDesann »

Alright so now that summer is here I might be getting back into modding since I'll have more time. Veriss is pretty much finished except for the SIDES which I plan on finishing at some later point. Now the beta is all zipped up and ready to go, but the file size is abnormally huge. Uncompressed the file size is (sit down for this) 263 MB.

Yes, I have custom SIDES but they're only reskins. I'm sure I screwed up somewhere in the munging process and that's why the file size is so huge. If anyone has any advice on how to fix this that'd be great! Thanks!

How big is your abc.lvl in

C:\Program Files\LucasArts\Star Wars Battlefront II\GameData\addon\ABC\data\_LVL_PC\ABC?
Also how big are all the custom sides?

Try rar'ing it on "Best" (if you have win-rar)(which you should)
How big is it after that?

Oh and a question for someone else to answer:
Which is better
Rar at "best"
or an installer?

  • 1. Use Syth's method posted here.
    2. Make sure only .LVL's you are using are in the SIDE folder.(if your not using the turret side delete it)
    3. Use 7-Zip Compression. It's the best I've found yet. And if you want to make it so people don't have to have the 7-zip program to open it, check the "create self-extracting archive" button.
That should be your best bet and I should know, I'm stuck on dial-up. :D

:EDIT:
Whoops, forgot to put the link to Syth's thing. Fixed now.

Okay, it's the SIDE folder. It's exactly 236MB. Also I compressed the map with 7zip and it was still 83.5MB.

You've deleted all unused textures right?

I did once. I guess I should try it again. I'll post back later.

Clean your side(s) and remove their unit names from their [SIDE NAME].req file. ;)

That's what I do for everything now. Use 7-zip. It's compression is phenomenal on Fastest, athough there are a few faster methods, Fastest has an outstanding speed while not using too much memory.
The other, faster compression methods like Ultra are gargantuan memory users. Last I checked it was 215 MB (for a dictionary size of 6MB), and by memory I mean the Computer memory, not the hard drive.
But its speed is so fast, I got my Kamino Breakout done in less than 15 seconds (but I had to cancel since my comp almost crashed from the memory usage, but then again, my comp is kind of low end).

Whew, that was quite a bit.

Delete any unnecessary reqs. That takes up the most space. Also, delete unnecessary odfs.

Well the data_VER/Sides folder is 100MB. I've cut as much excess files as possible but everytime I munge the sides the map comes out 200+ MB. I don't understand it.

And I have a question that may or may not be related but is it unusual for me to not to have a data_***/_BUILD/Sides/*** folder?
